Twenty-four notes. It's a simple melody, 150 years old, that can express our gratitude when words fail. Taps honors the men and women who have laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom. Fair winds and following seas, shipmates.
This version of taps was recorded by the United States Navy Band at the following locations:
Display Ship Barry, Washington Navy Yard U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington, D.C. Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Today our Fearless Leader, Jim Robinson was buried so I'm playing Taps for him.

“Home is the sailor, home from the sea… and the Hunter home from the hill….”
Rest in peace, Jim. Godspeed home.
HAND SALUTE!!!!!!!................TWO!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this beautiful rendition of Taps. Fair winds and following seas, Jim. Thank you for all you have done for us.
The salute to Jim is good. More and more people tell me thank you on memorial day. Everyone please note, veterans day is for the living. Memorial day is for the one who paid the ultimate price, the ones who did not come home. Respectfully.
I, too, am former Navy...I believe Veteran’s Day is for ALL veterans, living or deceased....
Lovely. Thank you.
I miss him very much.
Lights Out March--Arthur Pryor's Band (1911)
If you attended the University of California at Berkely or are a fan of Cal Golden Bears football, you are very familiar with this tune.
Il Silenzio (the silence)--Nini Rosso (1965)
A huge hit in Europe (but not the US) in the late summer and fall of '65.
RIP MR JIM.
From my father’s book, Old Soldiers’ Drums, 1933
TAPS
In a quiet hospital ward an old soldier is dying.
A young hospital orderly sits by his side. As the
dying man gasps a few words the notes of Taps float
in the open window.
“Fades the light ... and afar ... goeth day, cometh night ...”
“Yes, it’s almost finished ... my hitch is done
I’ve done my duty ... I’ve known some friends.
It was well worthwhile ... I’ve no regrets.
I hate to leave the Army but my discharges comes
‘From Higher Authority’ than my own C. O.
Seven hash marks. Son: will you show as much?
And all my characters were ‘Excellent’!
“And a star ... guideth all ...”
“I had my star, too, not in cash
But the flaunting of a bit of color at sunset
I ain’t talked about it much, a man don’t talk
About the things he feels. I’ve loved it though ...
“Leadeth all ... to ... their ... rest.”
“Adios, Kid! I’m done ... one thing though ...
Tell that recruit in my squadroom to strai ...
Ah-h-h-h!”
The bugler lights a cigarette and throws away the match.
Honors to you Jim since we were fellow Interior Communications Electricians in the Navy. God has you now. Fair winds and following seas.
Morgana posted it, I just replied.
But yes, thank you, Morgana
Many Prayers for Jim’s Family and Friends. Jim was a great soul and God chose a great human to lead FReeRepublic.
Typical WWII veteran burial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery
At burial service:
Missing man fly over[ airforce],
one chaplain,
one personal representative,
one Arlington Lady,
one Arlington Lady escort,
one Observer,
one Guard at attention on site,
eight Flag bearers (six flag bearers, or head bearer, and one Air Force honor bearer),
21 marching band soldiers,
1 caisson pulled by 7 horses,
4 horsemen,
8 body bearers,
and one bugler to play Taps.
45 people at least - what a parade too bad I can’t remember it.
What then is memorial day for?
Memorial Day is for those who gave their lives for their country just as you said...Veterans Day is for ALL veterans, living or dead....
Until they played Taps.

Fair winds and following seas, Jim. You certainly made a difference and you will be missed.
