If Chuck Schumer and his gang actually had to stand up and talk for days at a time, maybe they wouldn’t be so arrogant about keeping their Obamacare subsidies in the budget. And if the rest of the Senate couldn’t do any other business that would be fine. The same thing goes for the Republicans when they’re in the minority. In any case, if you’re going to have a filibuster, make them do it right!

Bring back dueling. We’ll see how committed these commies are.
Not exactly sexy subject but it’s holding things up. Should these people get paid while they’re shutting down the government? Fact is most of these people have plenty of their own FU money and they’re saying to the public.
Bring back horsewhipping. They all need a good one, along with idiot Pence who is back in the news today. 3%Pence is going to save the uniparty.
To allow a senator to only declare the intent to filibuster without actually doing it is as stupid as letting a pitcher tell you he intentionally walks you without throwing th ... wait.
Never mind.
Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. I’m not sure reverting to the old filibuster rules is a cure-all, but it would likely be an improvement over the current rules. And one thing to consider is the optics are a talking-filibuster.
It would be a lot harder to convince the public that your party was not the obstructionist party if Senators of the your party were literally speaking on the Senate floor 24/7 in order to prevent a vote. Taking this most recent shutdown as an example, think of how much harder it would have been for the Democrats to convince people the shut down was the fault of the Republicans if the news had nightly video of Democrat Senators reading from pages of a phone book on the Senate floor.
If they want to do it, make them do it for real.
Watched “ Mr Smith Goes to Washington” for the first time all the way thru last night.
Thought I’d be mad at the end, but I wasn’t. Maybe old rules might be ok.
>> ‘Mend it don’t end it’. That would work.
Agree.
The whole point of the Democrat shutdown was to get the focus off of crime in the Blue cities, and immigration and other issues they were losing ground. So in that respect, it was a very successful shutdown for them. That is one of the reasons that they held out until after the elections last week.
I second the motion.
If Mr. & Mrs. 300%-of-FPL have to buy a Pelosi Pig Policy at twice what they should have to pay, a 50% “subsidy” isn’t a true subsidy.
Thank you for posting this. It’s the clearest explanation I’ve read of the current filibuster rule and how we got here.
