MI5 believed a hardcore of around 750 teachers was attempting to spread communist propaganda in British schools in the wake of the second world war, documents released today show.
A secret MI5 memo written in August 1949, released by the National Archives at Kew, west London, charts apparent efforts to recruit teachers and infiltrate the leadership of the National Union of Teachers.
The document, which traces a Soviet-backed drive to free worldwide education from capitalist "enslavement" back to 1920, also reports attempts to penetrate teaching in British colonies in the early post-war period.
The report was written against a backdrop of positive vetting by Clement Atlee's government to identify communists in the British civil service and military.
The document compares the extent of communist penetration in the education system elsewhere, particularly eastern European countries within the Soviet sphere of influence.
The memo highlights how education had been key to the previous year's communist coup in Czechoslovakia, which effectively consolidated the Eastern Bloc for the next four decades.
MI5 noted that Czech school textbooks had been rewritten and non-communist students excluded from membership of the national student union.
According to MI5, which had heavily infiltrated the British Communist party, in 1946 teachers accounted for 755 of the 38,766 known members.
By the time the report was written in August 1949, MI5 estimated that there had been "little change", with an estimated 700 to 750 teachers in the party.
"The British Communist party has attached considerable importance both to the recruitment of teachers and to the safeguarding of membership particulars of the individuals in order to protect those individuals from possible political reprisals," MI5 observes.

But nobody bothers to vote in school board elections.
Same thing happened in the USA, even with our more decentralized system.
Lets not forget that Kim Philby, Anthony Blunt, John Cairncross, Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess all were Oxbridge men.
Pre-WWII, many university students were seduced into communism because it was portrayed as the only political force that could stop the spread of fascism (and they naively believed communism somehow was more benign than fascism). Ironically, one historical researcher recently uncovered information he claims incriminates Anthony Blunt as the spy who warned [fascist] Hitler about Operation Market Garden, a leak that compounded Allied losses, blunted the success of the operation, and precipitated the Netherlands Famine of 1944-45.
