'Friendly' San Diego city officials are set to send teams of inspectors to dig through people's trash cans looking for recycling violations.
Nicely, of course.
They plan to issue 'oops' citations to scofflaws who throw the wrong stuff in the wrong trash bins.
In San Diego, we put trash in one of three bins -- generic trash (black can), recycle trash (blue can), and organic trash such as food scraps and lawn clippings (green bin.) (snip)
Oh, it's not because they want to go through our trash, they say.
Ostensibly, it's a safety concern -- some people are throwing batteries into the bins and some of the trucks are blowing up, which does sound like a serious problem, if true.
Do they do inspections after they find a battery or before? How could they stop a trash-truck fire unless it's pre-emptive, making every resident a suspect?
The video didn't say.
But is digging through every trash can the answer? What if they find other stuff they disapprove of? What if they would like to tell a neighbor of his affair with the other neighbor's wife, too? What if city officials would really like to go through a political opponent's trash under the pretext of searching for battery scofflaws?
We should just trust them, you see.
And in a blue city that's already bankrupt, are they really going to be able to do that effectively in a city of 1.4 million? How can they be sure they'll get the right violator?
Aren't there better ways to trace violations than mass inspections of cans? Cameras?
How will they prove who did what?

They did something like that on college campuses years ago. The self-appointed student sustainability czars would go through the trash to fish out things that weren’t disposed of in the right way. That’s probably still going on.

Well, this won’t work in apartment buildings where everyone shares a trash dumpster. For single family neighborhoods, just place your questionable trash in your neighbors bin.
Exactly. If I have excess trash, I always put it in a neighbor's bin if there's room. And my neighbors do the same.
Look for Democrat signs or evidence they are liberal. :)

San Diego is a big corner of CA. Here in my mid-sized semi-rural corner of CA, all sorting isn’t automated at the dump and we’re not required to sort. I can’t help but think they have access to the same technology. Sounds like enforced virtue signaling to me

When I grew up in the 50’s, in the far future (the 2000’s) we were going to have flying cars, a base on the moon and robots doing menial labor.
They’ll be Spandex Jackets, one for everyone.
They were doing this in South Jersey about 15 years ago. Some areas trash has to be in clear bags so they can see whats in there.
Our Trash pick up, Named Waste Management (which I think is really Western Mafia), is implementing cameras and AI to watch as the trash bins are being emptied into the truck to identify ‘offenders’.
There is an associated fines (big) for wrong trash/recylable in the wrong bin.
They shouldn’t separate recyclables, everything goes in the trash can

4 bins for paper & cardboard, clear glass, colored glass and cans.
