In all seriousness, it seems very reminiscent of the child sacrifice religions of the Canaanites in the Old Testament (which the Jews sometimes did when they'd turn from God).

I agree. But, in the eyes of God, I doubt it is more special than historical societies. Our society is collapsing. If you look for things like “phases of civilization” or “stages of civilization” you will see that we are entering one of the final phases.
