“It hit the crease between the wall and the warning track on the fly and came to a dead stop instantly.”
So, all that was required and did happen, he merely went over to it and picked it up. Did not have to pry it out.
The Blue Jays definitely had the momentum but Hernandez short hop was amazing and Rojas catch was even more amazing.
That's baseball, folks!
If the ball bounces off the wall right to the outfielder, odds are the runners would be on 2nd and 3rd, anyway. Of course we’ll never know, but the rule is clear.
As former Rangers manager, Ron Washington said, “That’s how baseball go.”
The fact that the ball lodged as opposed to naturally hit the wall and rolled back on to the playing field enabled the runners to get an extra base.
Because the player threw his hands up and didn’t play the ball the runners were able to score.
So you go back to what if the ball didn’t lodge? The Umpire makes the decision runners on 2nd and 3rd.
ABSOLUTELY a correct call. The amazing thing was the outfielder who actually KNEW the Rule.
Define “easily”.
Would 2 seconds of tugging be considered “easily”? How about 3 seconds of tugging?
Would using your fingernails be required?
Let’s say you weren’t using your fingernails and it took you 3 seconds to dislodge it but would have only taken 1.5 seconds if you had used your fingernails. Is that considered “easily”?
What if the center fielder grabs it and his hands slips off, grabs it again and is able to dislodge it “easily”, makes a throw to the base and is .001 seconds late? Would it be reasonable to say that the ball being lodged in the fence caused the runner to be safe?
This was the right call.
Since the ball was lodged, it required to outfielder to run all the way to the fence, as opposed to if the ball bounces off the wall, the ball moves toward the outfielder, which allows him to throw the ball back to the infield sooner.
It wouldn’t be a good championship game without an officiating controversy.
Great point. I think Dean is a newbie and he instantly threw his arms up and didn’t retrieve the ball. Game winning decision!
I probably didn't word it clearly but that was 100% my point.
“...but the rule is clear.”
No it is not; the fielder merely needed to pick up the ball. This is incredible. It did lodge, but it did not affect the play, other than it helped the fielder pick up the ball.
How did it help the fielder? He had to run all the way to the fence to retrieve the ball, as opposed to the ball going towards him.
Happy Halloween!
'curious to know how many times it's happened at that stadium...???
Pathetic that the author of the article thought that his job was get a bunch of X posts griping about the play, but never bothered to post the text of the rule, which is very clear. Thanks for posting it.
I think the runner was banking on being the tying run. I don’t know, had it not been the bottom of the ninth in the (potential) winning game of the World Series, he probably would have stayed closer to second. He got caught up in the moment. Still bad base running. Ended the game.
Regardless of the call last night, my money is on the grounds crew plugging that gap in some way so it can’t happen again.
Whether it’s a row of bricks, or clay, or pool noodles, or Great Stuff foam, it’ll be plugged.
Because if it somehow happens again, heads will roll.
