UPS Has Cut 48,000 Workers Since Last Year

UPS has since last year reduced its work force by 48,000 employees, the company said on Tuesday, in a cost-cutting drive aimed at bolstering profits and winning back investors.

The Atlanta-based delivery company, which had nearly half a million employees at the start of the year, said 34,000 positions were cut this year among its drivers and warehouse workers, mostly in the United States. The other 14,000 came out of management's ranks in cuts that began last year.

UPS's stock price has long lagged the wider stock market, putting pressure on its leaders to deliver stronger profits. News of the work force reductions and better-than-expected third-quarter results prompted a 7 percent jump in the company's shares on Tuesday...

Employment has stalled across the economy, according to the latest government data. And other companies are also shrinking their work forces. Amazon is planning to cut 14,000 white-collar jobs, a company memo said, to reduce bureaucracy and shift resources.

UPS reported net income of $1.3 billion in the third quarter, down from $1.5 billion a year earlier. Revenue totaled $21.4 billion in the third quarter, a decline from $22.2 billion last year.

Though profit declined, UPS executives pointed to improvements elsewhere in the results on a call with Wall Street analysts on Tuesday. Revenue per package in the United States grew 10 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, Ms. Tomé said.

Many of UPS's employees are members of the Teamsters union, which in April warned the company that it would fight job cuts that were not in line with its labor contract. On Tuesday, Ms. Tomé said UPS was "in compliance with the terms of our contract."

There's been some (other) signs that a slow Christmas shopping season is expected.

How did those 48,000 employees put food on the table after getting the pink slip? Were they hungry a day or two after the income ended? Isn’t it funny that the MSM never picks up their sob stories?

Based on the number of delivery vehicles racing around our town, there’s no sign of a slowdown!

Odd too that this has been going on all year, but the DNC’s media concern trolls only got the talking point memo this week.

The recently built Amazon shipping center NW of Grand Rapids looks to be at least as large as the decades-old UPS shipping center on the south end. I see Amazon trucks all the time, and not just because they're in my driveway here in The Boonies.
I saw two UPS trucks one day last week, and while driving by the second one I got thinking, when was the last time I saw even one?
I get parcels through USPS (books mostly, also little dongles and other doodads) much more often. When I get med supplies I never see who does it, but they always leave it right by the back door and I appreciate it.

14000 managers? That seems obvious place to cut.

Back in the ‘90s I worked part time at our local UPS hub loading aircraft shipping containers, also referred to as “cans” on the overnight shift, as well as my full-time day job. I worked there a little over a year. Christmas was brutal. I swore I would be out of there before the next Christmas, and I was. I was in my 40s at the time. The part time money was good, with full benefits (Teamsters, after all). But it got to be too much.

Of all the carriers, UPS is my preferred given the driver has been the same for many years at time. I got to know them by name, and they had my cell # in case of any shipping issues. Fedex and USPS to a much lesser extent, and I’ve never noticed the same Amazon driver more than once. And as mentioned upthread, some Amazon deliveries are made with the driver’s personal car. Amazon’s warehousing also makes 4-hour overnight deliveries a possibility.

I see Amazon trucks more frequently than UPS trucks.

Amazon, not long ago, spent $4 billion to expand their fleet as a less-expensive alternative to UPS, and also signed a deal with FedEx instead of UPS.

this is all due to the fact the UPS dumped amazon as a major customer because amazon was not a PROFITABLE customer ...
