Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not go to a regional leaders summit in Malaysia this week to avoid meeting President Donald Trump and having possible conversations about Pakistan, people familiar with the matter said, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
Modi was at first supposed to go to the meeting in person, but he changed his plans at the last minute and decided to attend virtually, according to Business Recorder.
Indian officials were concerned that Trump would again bring up his claim that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after a four-day conflict in May, the sources said, according to Bloomberg. India has consistently denied Trump's involvement.
Ties between New Delhi and Washington have soured since the Pakistan conflict five months ago, with Trump implementing 50% tariffs on Indian exports in August, half of which is a penalty on the country for buying Russian oil.

It’s true. Ceasefire talks were already in place before Trump had said a word. The DGMO (Director General of Military Services) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India to discuss a ceasefire. This was after India blew up 8 of their airfields in one day and had complete control over skies. It was effectively a surrender.
He’s just mad the H1B visa gravy train has slowed to a crawl.

I guess it is not clear what India has to gain by meeting with Trump.
Numbers: India 2024 trade surplus with US $42 Billion. India GDP 2024 $4.1T. GDP growth is about 5%/yr.
The US surplus is 1% of GDP and they grow that GDP 5%/yr. This is, yes, insignificant.
Times have changed. There is no clout there. Turn off all imports from India (100%) to the US and it would, for just 1 year, erase 1% of India GDP growth, making it 4%. That number would return to 5% the next year since there is no further trade surplus with the US for the US to shut off.
