How much does the federal government spend on SNAP every year?

About $100.3 billion during fiscal year (FY) 2024. That’s 1.5% of all federal spending.

the first federal Food Stamp Program was established in 1939 and went through a number of iterations before it officially became SNAP in 2008. SNAP funding is authorized through the Farm Bill as open-ended mandatory spending, excerpts. And; In FY 2024, the average participant received $188 in monthly benefits, down 25.8% from a FY 2021 high of $253 per person. - https://usafacts.org/answers/how-much-does-the-federal-government-spend-on-snap-every-year/country/united-states/

The less dependent we are on gov. and more on God than the better.

---- "The less dependent we are on gov. and more on God than the better."

We've been reading headlines that a large portion of Americans are overweight. So let's think of this as a dietary restriction for people who shouldn't been gobbling fast foods and high-fructose corn syrup in sodas and more.

You latter point is well taken. God will provide.

“How many people receive SNAP benefits in the US every month?”

About 20,000,000 too many, too lazy, or too obese.

fedgov spent $100bn just on food for 41m people.

how much do you think they spent on the 20m+ illegals they brought in... fed, housed, and provided health care for?

at least $1000/mon

20m * $1000/mon == $20bn/mon => $240bn/yr

$100 billion total SNAP spend and 12% of the population
receiving SNAP benefits is too high in my view.
But - if our GDP is $30 trillion and our NATO contribution is 5% of GDP that
makes our NATO contribution $1.5 trillion or FIFTEEN times what we pay for SNAP.
Doesn’t make sense to me to spend 15 times more on nato than snap.
I’m not saying snap should increase by any means - but nato is total bullcrap.

From the article:

“Qualifying for SNAP benefits is based on how close a household’s income level is to the national poverty line. If expenses aren’t considered (i.e., gross monthly income), households must make less than 30% above the federal poverty level. If expenses are considered, households must make less than the federal poverty level.”

From Google AI:

The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) is a measure of income used to determine eligibility for federal programs, with the 2025 FPL for a one-person household being $15,650. The FPL is an annual income threshold that varies by household size and location, with the guidelines updated each year to account for inflation. For example, the FPL for a family of four in the contiguous states is $32,150.
How it’s determined: The FPL is based on poverty thresholds that were originally calculated in the 1960s and are updated annually for inflation.
Purpose: It is used to determine eligibility for various government assistance programs, such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and health insurance Marketplace subsidies.

2025 Guidelines (contiguous states and D.C.):
1 Person: $15,650
2 People: $21,150
3 People: $26,650
4 People: $32,150
5 People: $37,650
6 People: $43,150
7 People: $48,650
8 People: $54,150

For households with more than eight people:
The guidelines increase by $5,500 for each additional person in the contiguous states.

Higher poverty levels:
Many programs use a percentage of the FPL (such as 138% or 200%) to determine eligibility.

Variations for Alaska and Hawaii:
Poverty guidelines are higher in Alaska and Hawaii to account for the higher cost of living.

_____________

Seems to me, a federal poverty level doesn’t make a lot of sense. This is reflected for Hawaii and Alaska, but there’s great variation between states in the lower 48 that are not accounted for.

How many of thse receiving SNAP benefits are immigrants and illegal aliens who receive SNAP and other handouts in spite of laws against it?

What this country needs is a complete new slate of politicians and bureaucrats who will obey our laws and who will represent American citizens instead of immigrants, illegal aliens and the interests of foreign countries.

Well, a rich Republican covered the military payroll, so it seems like time for a rich Democrat to cover the SNAPper payroll. You know, bi-partisan.

Somebody like

Bill Gates

Clinton Foundation

Nancy Pelosi Institute For Insider Trading ,,,,

The list goes on.

The #1 top eligibility requirement for government handouts should be American citizenship.

If applicants are not citizens they should NOT be receiving any government handouts.

There are laws on the books to that effect but our crooked politicians and bureaucrats don’t obey our laws.

$100.3B annual spend
41.7M recipients
$188/month in average recipient benefits

This means ~$2,405/month (or 12x the average benefit) is spent per recipient per month in overhead.

If overhead was a third of that I could still not hate the federal bureaucracy enough. I pay something in that range each month to feed my family of 8.

I bet Leticia James’ niece is on SNAP while at her aunt’s house in Norfolk.

All she has to do is claim she is paying rent when she is not.

That’s 41.7 million freeloaders. Many of which are totally useless individuals incapable of taking care of themselves.

All government welfare should be terminated.

You can’t criticize or investigate the states’s use of the money. “It’s for the children…”

SNAP is the next USAID.

Ok. This is a post from Facebook. I know this person, I worked with them. This is their post about SNAP and how the left sees things during this shutdown. Let me know what u think.

“Again, if you think losing SNAP/EBT is okay because it will "Get rid of the Welfare Queens," I'll keep praying for you. "Welfare Queens" aren't the only ones losing food. It's families with disabled members, veterans, elderly, etc. People that HAVE put in their fair share of work to deserve it.

But by all means, if 1% of a population needs to learn a lesson, the rest of the population needs to learn a lesson too. Right? That's the mentality? That's the logic? If they can't earn their way, screw them?

If I were a Pastor and saw some of the things my congregation were posting on Facebook, I would be telling my congregation this morning that all funds within the Church will be used for feeding this community and nothing else. I would ignore all other focus of tithe money to prove a point.
~br> If local Churches aren't willing to do this, I feel better knowing that there are people in this community willing to help those in need. That's the community I remember. That's the community that was present when I was younger. Where's that community now?

Be safe. Be Kind. Be love. Much love and more love, as always.”

In FY 2024, New Mexico had the highest share of its population receiving SNAP payments...

I know 4 persons that are
perfectly capable of holdlng
down a paying job, but
instead, choose to sit on
their lazy asses.
My mother raised 5
kids, (granted with food
stamps), while attending
college to obtain a
better lifestyle.
Food benefits have evolved
from a hand up, to a hand
out.

The media always lists percent of population, but paracite/taxpayer ratio is more appropriate.

For the 2021 tax year, approximately 152.3 million individual income tax returns were filed.

41 million paracites : 152 million taxpayers

3.7 taxpayers being forced to support each paracite.

Any taxpayer funded assistance in this manner should:

only be used for nutritious food

no fast food or prepared foods

no food from so called convenience stores

*****

With the ability to program inventories today this should not be a difficult thing to do. Especially with the benefits being issued via a "credit card" type medium.

I worked at a grocery store many moons ago and saw the abuse of the system.

I also saw some truly needy people. I well remember one single(?) mom with two kids. She'd picked up some items she thought were covered by WIC....but they weren't. I told her very quietly so as to not embarrass her. She looked about crushed when I told her.

Those are the folks who need our help.

How many SNAP recipients are working and being paid under the table so they can claim to be poorer than they actually are?
