Linux, Windows, the advent of AI in our Operating Systems

Posted on 10/23/2025 10:05:38 AM PDT by ducttape45

As many of us have seen, Windows 11 is introducing AI into PCs programmed with that O/S. Granted, there are methods of removing it. Installing W11 with Rufus software is a common way of doing it. Using Flyoobe is another option. There is also software out there to remove unwanted components once W11 is installed.

Regardless, I, and I'm sure many others, are trying to find ways of running Windows software on a Linux system. I've run across a few software packages in Linux that try to accomplish this. Bottles, Wine, Winapps and PlayonLinux are just a few things I've looked into using, but that route is very confusing. Until Microsoft starts allowing it's software to run on Linux we are at loggerheads with the software industry.

I am to the point where I'm ready to try installing my Windows operating systems via VMWare in Linux. That way I don't have to reboot the computer in order to go back and forth between them.

But I'd like to hear what you all have to suggest. Perhaps others who are in the same boat as me can also learn from what is shared here. If someone has a tried and tested method of installing products like Wine, or running Windows O/S's in a VM environment, please include instructions on how to do it. I for one would love to see if there is a way of importing my current Window setups into VMWare without having to reprogram it all in again.

If they cared about us, they would focus the AI on catching and stopping Viruses, Spyware and Malware.

Perhaps a little more advanced for most people but I do quite enjoy my setup. I built a “server” and run Proxmox as a hypervisor, which is essentially debian with a web gui for QEMU. From here you create your virtual guests. I used PCIE passthrough for a GPU, and also some USB passthroughs for peripherals. Now my “physical desktop” is actually just a virtualized slice with a physical monitor, keyboard, and mouse. From here you can make many virtual machines for other services/development/experimentation. I run an Apache Guacamole server on a FreeBSD VM which allows me to access all linux/windows guests from my macbook pro while sitting on the couch. As far as software I went more of the replacement route, especially with the ability to host services. I have replaced anything I ever really needed on windows. However if I do need something on windows I can simply pull up the windows vm in any browser, or access directly by togging the passthroughs. Now I just need the new intel pro series GPU’s to actually support VGPU.

That's what I do, and it is great.

Pros:

Cons: Overall IMO it's a terrific technology, and I recommend it, especially for running a Windows guest VM.

Windows on Linux ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

One of the great things about Linux is that if you have a problem, there are online fora where Linux geeks are happy to answer questions and resolve problems. MS doesn’t do that.

Exactly, that’s why I want to roll over completely to Linux. I found a few of my programs that I could program into Linux, but not enough. That’s why I’m thinking seriously about utilizing VMWare in Linux so I can still run my older W7 stuff in a virtual environment.

I’m just sticking to 100% Linux and avoid every bit of AI I can. If this means sacrificing a little convenience, personal addictions, or even a few bucks so be it, I can live without them. I refuse to allow digital enslavement technology take advantage of me, compromise my self dignity, or own me. I refuse to submit to addiction and digital slavery.

I think my processor is ok (Intel Core i5-6600, 3.30 GHz, 3301 MHz, 4 cores), and I’m rnnning 64GB of memory. That’s the max my system will allow. I hope that will do.

I'm in the process of putting together a newer system. I want to install Linux Mint on it, then experiment with installing VMWare to run W& & W10. I would love it, however, if there was a way to import what I have now into a virtual environment without going thru the hassle of reinstalling all my software again. Then as time goes on, I want to either find Linux versions of my sofware to replace what's in my Windows O/S's or find Linux alternatives.

But long story short, it's time to get away from Windows/MicroThief.

The memory is more than fine.

The i5-6600 is a 4-core CPU that does not support hyper-threading, so you'll probably want to split the 4 cores between the two OSes (2 each). Whether that gives you adequate performance will depend on what you are doing in each OS.

If you need more performance in one OS vs. the other, you can try splitting 3/1 rather than 2/2. These days running with only one core is considered pretty thin, but the i5 is clocked at 3.3GHz so you might get away with it.

In 1991:

Me: Is it kind of like SCO Unix?

Him: It’s similar but minix based.

Me: Cool, please keep me informed, we’d love to play with it.

Him: Sure.

We saw version 0.01 and kept in touch then eventually dumped SCO. Been running Linux systems from then until today.

Linux changed the world with (his pronunciation) LEEEENUUUX.

“One of the great things about Linux.”

1. Free.
2. No License.
3. No second party Account Required.
4. One install download can be installed on as many Computers as you like.
5. It is designed to self check and repair itself.
6. Superior Security.
7. Every line of code can be personally audited and edited including the Kernel.
8. Open source and audited constantly.
9. It belongs to you and only you.
10. Highly customizable.
11. You can create your own custom Distro if you like.
12. Light compared to MS, 2Gb instead of 18Gb.
13. Fast.
14. No automatic updates if you like.
15. Updates are extremely minimal and never change personal configurations or settings. Updates are to the point and fix only what needs fixing, no extra unneeded bloat programming.

That is just the start of a long list. :)

I’m to the point where I physically go down to a local tax preparer and pay $200 before I submit to the MS Ball and Chain just to use Turbotax... And that “ONE” game I just could not live without? I threw it away 10 years ago to stand on priorities, and don’t miss it one bit. All that MS heartache I have missed justifies kicking that addiction a thousand fold over the last ten years.

“... avoid every bit of AI I can”

I’m not a power user and run Windows 11 at work and at home. I just use the common applications.

Where do I experience AI except the applications which I don’t consider part of the operating system itself?

I wondered if the 4-core processor would/could be an issue. I don't do gaming are a lot of CPU intensive stuff, so hopefully I'll be ok. However, that being said, I'm glad you pointed that out to me so when I get my motherboard in I can hopefully locate a better processor with more cores to it.

Thank you.

Unless you purposely use AI apps or Apps that use AI as a “secondary resource” as part of that app, the apps are safe from AI until they come out with an AI “Version”. But Windows 11 itself is being turned into an AI based Operating System and they are doing it through the updates. Another common source of AI is Search Engines, almost all search engines are now using AI hidden or not hidden.

Meaning even if you do not select “AI results” in a search, they are still using AI to filter and censor the search results they give you. It takes a lot of effort to avoid AI now. Beginning with losing Microsoft and changing to a safer more secure OS like Linux. Even Google ChromeOS is being made AI based... It is a real problem, it is like a turbocancer and spreading fast into EVERYTHING.
