A federal judge in Chicago just made a decision that’s raising eyebrows — and not just among immigration officers.

In a move that’s already stirring debate nationwide, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings ruled that ICE agents — yes, federal officers — can be arrested if they take migrants into custody at Cook County courthouses without a proper warrant. Let that sink in for a second.

And if ICE agents can be arrested for doing their jobs, what kind of message does that send to those who aren’t even supposed to be here in the first place?

If Federal agents resist an attempt to arrest them by a local police department, that is Fort Sumter 2.0. It will enable President Trump to declare Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington State, or California in a state of insurrection. That will enable regular Army troops to take control and arrest the officials who ordered the resistance. Martial law can be declared, and local police forces will either choose to be deputized or forced to disband and disarm.

Note that for all the complaining about Federal force by Southern state governors during school desegregation, none of them told their police forces to fight the Feds. They figured one civil war was enough.
