In conclusion:

Lott points out that the FBI has known about this issue and acknowledged its error three years ago, but has taken no action to rectify it. “In the years since,” he notes, “the problem has only gotten worse. Since RCI’s 2022 article, the FBI has acknowledged just three additional incidents of armed good Samaritans stopping active shooters from 2022 to 2024, and none in the last two years. In contrast, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), which I head, has documented 78 such cases over that same period — a 26-fold difference.”

There’s an implication here that ALL armed defensive uses would even be reported. Lott himself pointed out in previous works that in a grand majority of cases of defensive handgun use, a shot is never fired. It would be impossible to even guess at numbers of violent crimes stopped from brandishing alone given that a crime wasn’t committed in that instance.

This also assumes reporting to LE. If brandishing alone was sufficient to allow someone to flee, would reporting even be necessary? On the other hand, without that gun and the intent to use it, that individual may have been shot or, worse, killed.

FBI should stick to facts it CAN report on accurately, meaning that they shouldn’t be trying to report on defensive firearm use outside of reported incidents, and those statistics should be heavily disclaimed.

My life in Chicago’s inner city has been saved twice by bystanders who pulled out their concealed carry to force my attackers to back off. No shots were fire. No police report. The bystanders did not want publicity.

1) Most success, and most failure, of concealed carry is in high crime areas.
2) High crime areas are not obsessed with statistics like low crime areas.
3) People who practice Conceal Carry value the “conceal” aspect and do not want publicity.
4) In Chicago (and most high crime areas) half the police will look the other way on the person who uses conceal carry to protect their neighbors. But half the police will arrest the person practicing conceal carry along with the aggressor. Who knows what type of police officer will shop up?
5) The #1 function of Police Reports is to file insurance claims. People in high crime areas can’t afford insurance, whose rates are very high in high crime areas. So there is no reason to file a Police Report that draws attention to the complainant and not to the criminal.
