Remember back after 9-11 when the left wing media was twisting itself into knots about the correct spelling of, "Osama," vs. "Usama," for fear of being disrespectful? Because so many different western nations/language groups have had to deal with Arabic speakers for so long, there are a lot of different transliterative systems that have been ddeveloped to translate Arabic words/names into French, English, Italian, etc. Depending on them system used you'll get Mohammed, Mohamed, Muhammed, etc.

For the same reason that there are so many different variants of, say, the name "John": Languages and dialects!

Johannes, Johann, John, Juan, etc.
