The small church of Domine Quo Vadis, which is situated on the Via Appia, at the junction with Via Ardeatina, marks the spot where, according to the apocryphal Acts of Peter, Christ met Peter as the latter was fleeing Rome. Its official name is Santa Maria delle Piante (St Mary of the Soles of the Feet)

I was very moved to stand in that church and hear the story. Whether or not Peter saw Christ there, he did return to Rome and was crucified upside down in the Colloseum, as he felt unworthy to die as Christ did.

The trip out of Rome and down the Appian way, which I did on a Segway tour, was very special.

Domine quo vadis - “Lord, whither goest thou?” appears in John 13:36. Apparently the phrase is repeated in the “Acts of Peter (with Simon).”
