When I worked at an allergy, ear nose and throat clinic, we got a new administrator, who was from India. She ran the front office like a boot camp -— no unnecessary talking, no joking, visiting, or otherwise filling empty time gaps with pleasantries. We were located at the opposite end of the suite, and the allergists would visit and joke with us when we weren’t busy. She never dared try to reign us in, but I felt sorry for the staff up front who couldn’t even talk to the person next to them without being rebuked.
