Chinese students better than American? Vivek Ramaswamy challenges H-1B system

Indian American entrepreneur and political figure Vivek Ramaswamy highlighted the value of the nonimmigrant program amid rising debates over the future of H-1B visas for specialty occupations.

Ramaswamy, former co-chair of Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, sparked discussion on social media by suggesting that Chinese students often outperform their American peers academically.

“75% of 8th graders in America aren’t proficient in math & the average student in China is 4 years ahead of the average US student,” he wrote Monday on X. “It’s time to get serious about fixing K-12 education.”

While Ramaswamy spoke specifically about students, Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna expressed a similar viewpoint during his appearance on the “All In” podcast last week. “One-third of the AI talent is in China, according to a lot of the reports,” Khanna told hosts Chamath Palihapitiya and Jason Calacanis at the time.

“I want some of those folks to come to the United States so we can stay ahead of AI. So there are legitimate uses of the H-1B program,” Khanna said, emphasizing the need for reform in the visa system while criticizing President Trump’s blanket $100,000 fee on new H-1B applications.

Meanwhile, Ramaswamy, a Harvard and Yale graduate born in Cincinnati to Indian immigrant parents, has expressed views aligned with the Trump administration on revamping the visa system. In late 2023, as Ramaswamy launched his campaign for the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial race, he described the H-1B program as “indentured servitude” and pledged to “gut” the lottery-based system, replacing it with “actual meritocratic admission.”

Right problem wrong answer. If American students are imbeciles when it comes to math, that’s the problem to fix. You don’t just replace them.

If our education system is that bad, and it is, fix it. Don’t replace us.

I realize teachers can’t teach what they don’t know, so if you’re going to replace someone, replace them.

What percentage of highly paid USA jobs require elite math skills?

Maybe 5%?

I can probably do more advanced math, and do it faster, on the basic calculator installed in my computer, than 90% of elite math students could do ten years ago.

Every human skill is vulnerable to automation and AI.

Invest your money on the people who have superior creative and executive skills, and on those who live in a country that values self-reliance and work ethic.

He wants to increase the population in Ohio from 11 million to 15 million (nearly 30%) by the end of his term as governor! They are not going to be Catholics! Trump needs to trash his endorsement of this POS.

He is a vegan! My area and much of rural Ohio is full of wonderful farm kids keeping it real. They all will become untouchables under the new caste system of imported scammers. We will lose the death penalty on top of every thing else. 90% or more of the sheriffs have endorsed him, spit.

The Vivek guy is one thing above all else.

He is anti Swamp. And that means yes, he is a disaster for the GOPe.

6-8 yrs in politics disqualifies you for office. It’s why Rubio is disqualified. DeSantis. Only Vance remains qualified.

Vivek is the swamp, his own swamp, an opportunist and a conman. His behavior in the biotech sphere makes that clear.

My University had a solution for deficient engineerin’ majors: The College of Basic Studies. Remedial math & english to mainstream them later.

If Vivek the scammer knows of Chinese talent to inflate the AI bubble, the O-1 visa is available.
The only solution for H1B/OPT/H4 is to end ‘em & send everyone home.
