Piper Sandler Companies released the results of its 50th semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens survey on Thursday.
"This fall, teens self-reported annual spending dropped to $2,213, which is a 6% decline year-over year and a 1% decline on average in the past 10 years. On a positive note, looking at wallet share for the upper-income teen, clothing grew 1% year-over-year, driven by females, while footwear share held steady after a decline last spring," highlighted Piper Sandler analyst Anna Andreeva.
Nike (NYSE:NKE) once again was the top clothing brand for teens, with Hollister (ANF) ranking number two and Brandy Melville a distant third among upper income teens. In footwear, Nike (NYSE:NKE) was the top brand, followed by Adidas (OTCQX:ADDYY) and then New Balance. On Running (ONON) jumped to fourth place to displace HOKA (DECK).
In the beauty category, e.l.f. Cosmetics (ELF) continues to dominate as the top cosmetics brand among teens, with Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty brand a distant second. Sephora (OTCPK:LVMHF) remains the number one favorite beauty shopping destination, followed by Ulta Beauty (ULTA) at number two.
Notably, Walmart (WMT) has steadily gained share in the apparel and footwear categories among upper-income female teens, although Target (TGT) remains the preferred shopping destination. In a breakout, Yeti (NYSE:YETI) achieved a record level of brandawareness this year.
Chick-fil-A held on to its position as the preferred chain restaurant among teens, while McDonald's (MCD) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) ranked number two and three. Dr. Pepper (KDP) remained the number one favorite beverage brand, followed by Coca-Cola (KO) and Gatorade (PEP). Lays (PEP) was the top choice among teens for snacks, followed by Goldfish (CPB) and Cheez-Its (K). Red Bull was the top energy drink brand in the survey, followed by Monster (MNST) and Alani Nu, now owned by Celsius Holdings (CELH).
