Dr. George Cahill studied “Starvation in Man” in the late ‘60’s. He fasted volunteers for forty days. After ten days, their blood ketones were elevated to the point the brain was running on 75% ketones, 25% glucose.
He then gave them enough insulin to lower blood glucose to less than 20, which would normally kill a person, but they were unaffected, as most of the brain’s energy requirements were met by ketones.
