This was already a difficult shot for Vince Whaley at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. But notice DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM in the water, taking a front-row seat, sits an alligator.

I went to the University of South Florida in Tampa. The campus features a golf course running along the Hilsborough River. One of my classmates would go out at lunch with a bag of marshmallows and throw them to the alligators beside the river. Then he’d sit back and watch the golfers. When the golfers hit a ball within about thirty feet of the river, the river would erupt in foam and a dozen alligators would rush the ball and swallow it. Sometimes the golfers ran away. Sometimes they stood their thumbing the rule book. The classmate was entertained. I always wondered how many alligators he’d killed.

I’m pretty sure that if the gator swallows the ball, the golfer is allowed to take the gator, have it turned into a new golf bag, and resume play without penalty at the spot the ball was swallowed.
