From sagging jowls and sulfurous burps to deflated breasts and surprise pregnancies, the side effects of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs have ranged from subtle to strange.
Now, new research suggests that these wildly popular medications may also be throwing off critical medical imaging scans, interfering with doctors’ ability to detect serious — even deadly — diseases.
Experts say this could lead to delayed diagnoses and treatments for some patients, while others might undergo tests and procedures they didn’t need in the first place.
Originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 meds have become a sensation due to their powerful weight-loss effects. In the US alone, usage jumped a staggering 700% between 2019 and 2023.
These drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. They also boost insulin production, slow digestion and make people feel full longer, helping them slim down in record time.
While these biological changes can improve health, they may interfere with PET-CT scans, a tool doctors use to detect cancer and inflammatory diseases.
The science behind the scare PET-CT scans combine two powerful imaging tools to give doctors a detailed picture of what’s happening in the body.
The PET scan uses a radioactive substance called FDG that travels through the bloodstream and is absorbed by tissues. Cancer cells and other abnormal cells — like those involved in inflammation — soak up more FDG because they have a higher metabolic rate, according to UConn Health.
The PET scanner detects the radiation emitted by the FDG, creating images that highlight where the substance has collected.

“...unleashing them upon millions of people...”
Can’t have it both ways. And no one made anyone take the drugs. The doctors folded and started recommending them for the wrong purpose. And the pharmas made money and didn’t care what the docs were not taking the responsibility for.
I have been a diabetic since 1986 and have used a number of GLP-1 meds over the years as they became available and were increased in dose as my illness matured.
I was lambasted over these boards when I tried to tell people that these drugs have baggage and can do a lot of harm but so many people were so intent upon weight loss, many not tied to diabetes but to vanity, and now they are finding many of the possible problems they can get into. GLP-1 drugs are for the efforts to control the illness and only a few are even considered for weight loss by accident.
To my knowledge, none of them were ever created for weight loss. So, you made your bed, now sleep in it.

I've always believed that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I've been on a "sweet diet" for over a year, no ice cream, no cake, cookies or candy and usually only 2 beers a day about 280 calories.
As much as I love the fat on a good piece of steak, I trim it off.
My goal was modest only 20 pounds and I finally got there this month.
My hope is that the coming holidays don't weaken me so that I "find" the lost 20 pounds in two months.
I think people have become fatter in the last few years.
LOL
Soup has lots of water.
If you just eat soup, you probably can’t get fat.
Insurance shouldn’t pay for diet drugs.
I’m guessing it interacts with birth control pills lessening their effectiveness.
🤣 Now that was just *nasty*.
Oh oh oh the members of Pilot are in trouble now!!
David Paton and Ian Bairnson, of Pilot, became core members of the Alan Parsons Project.
WTF?????
Oh shut the f up.
Or alternately, your slobbish husband loses his beer belly and suddenly his man-stuff is accessible again.
Blasphemy!;-)
imho the biggest danger of glp 1 is that it can cause gall stones which give doctors an excuse to remove gall bladders.
So very true.
“ I’m still trying to figure out how Ozempic gets you pregnant.”
Oh, I know that. Few men want to sleep with fatties. Former fatties libido is unleashed by never-before-experienced male attention.
So they are complaining that the drug works. ;-)
I suppose that on the list of side effects, they can add, “May cause pregnancy.” ;-)
Astonishing that, per the article, 12% of Americans have used these drugs.
Astonishing.
“Research provided by Jennie Craig”?
Deflated breasts. Well, yeah, fat’s fat, and if your body is burning all the fat stores it doesn’t discriminate on origin. And baggy skin? OF COURSE! Look at ANY obese person who has lost weight, they all have lots of loose baggy skin.
