Senators rejected dueling stopgap spending bills Monday for the fifth time as lawmakers show few signs of nearing a detente —even as the shutdown-induced pain is poised to grow as the federal funding lapse heads into its second workweek.
Senate Republicans had hoped the Trump administration’s imminent threat of mass firings, paired with a weekend back home to hear from constituents, would shake loose even a couple of potential swing-vote Democrats. Add to that the fact that most federal workers and active duty members of the military are due to miss their first paychecks Oct. 10 and Oct. 15, respectively.
But Monday evening, Democratic Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada — alongside Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with Democrats — were once again the only three to break ranks and vote to advance the GOP-led stopgap bill, which would fund the government until Nov. 21.
Earlier in the day, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) reiterated that Democrats are ready to negotiate on a deal to end the shutdown, but the discussion on health care needs to happen now.
“We’re ready to work with Republicans to reopen the government and end the health care crisis that faces tens of millions of Americans. But it takes two sides to have a negotiation,” Schumer said.
Republicans also again rejected the Democratic stopgap that would link government funding through October to the party’s health care priorities, including a permanent extension of soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act subsidies, plus restrictions on President Donald Trump’s ability to unilaterally claw back congressionally approved funding.
Top Democrats have demanded a “bipartisan negotiation” on health care as part of the government funding fight.

“...NH should have closed their southern border to keep out the Massholes....”
Yep...for sure. Maine is in pretty much the same boat. The worst of the worse of the “massholes” have “migrated” up there and are now working hard to destroy the state just like they did in massholeachusetts.
How long before the Republicans cave?
Permit hospitals to collect the illegals’ bills from their employers.
Fire the whole DOE (.edu) for a start.
I'm with Rand on this one. He (and I) want a real budget and not just yet another "continuing resolution". And if it takes a while to get that, the longer the govt is "shut down" the more Trump can end the excess waste. Perhaps permanently (fire employees, not put them out on leave to come back with backpay).
IMHO Trump and the other Republicans are doing a great job this time of getting the word out that the Dims are the ones who own the shut down. And mainly for their constituent illegal aliens that the Dims put before American citizens. This isn't your daddy's shut down where the Republicans get blamed for it.
He’s been repping KY jelly since 2011.
>> even as the shutdown-induced pain is poised to grow
Woo hoo! I’m excited!
Speaking of growth — do remember to call your doctor if your joy-growth lasts more than four hours!
He has never gone with the team though, before Trump or after Trump
So please bear it in mind
He does it for different reasons than the hypocrite Dems
Oh when oh when will the RINO’s fold? Should be set up a pool??
“Medicare Premium Bill....Current Premium Due...Total Amount Due $555.00 by 10/25/2025”
That’s from a document that came yesterday.
That’s $185/month.
>> He has never gone with the team though
Yeah, Rand Paul and John McCain, brothers by a different mother. “Mavericks”, don’t you know.
That’s nothing to be proud of.
Being a short sighted zealot is bad for America.
Rand Paul is basically a zealot ass hole who flaunts his disillusion rather than get with what is going to eventually prevail. Rand’s zeal is a negative rather than a positive. In the end, he is a waste of senatorial protoplasm
The goal is to reduce spending rather than eliminate spending. Rand can’t grasp that his end spending zealotry is harmful.
“enhanced ACA tax credits”
Anything that helps kill Obamacare is a good thing, Anthony.
You can’t do a damn thing if the government is closed. Rand is stuck on stupid. You can’t balance an existing budget that took years to create with the twitch of your nose.
“For 4 years you watched this country get run into the ground on all fronts and you said nothing!
Now, it’s our turn!!!!”
And it is up to us to stay on our guys so they don’t Run it into the ground the way the rats did.
The easy thing for the illegals is to let hospitals go after the employers.
That leaves the PPACA subsidy expansion continuation issue.
Stop right there. Has the govt closed? The govt has been "shut down" for days, but has anything bad happened? Did the aircraft carriers all of a sudden sink? Did retirees quit getting their SS checks? Did sleigh rides stop at Yellowstone? (typed in my best Rush voice for when he made fun of the Dims hyperventilating over the 1990's "shut down" back when Republicans had gonads of steel during the Contract with America days)
Don't fall for the Dims' end of the world PR lies about the current "shut down". If this is what it takes to get some house cleaning, so be it. The same-o-same-o ain't working.
APPARENTLY
From senator Paul’s official site:
What is a government shutdown?
Congress must pass legislation each fiscal year to provide funds to pay for federal government operations. If funding expires without enactment of an appropriations legislation or a continuing resolution (CR) federal agencies implement plans that identify the non-essential government functions that are paused until appropriations are provided by law. During a shutdown, federal agencies will suspend or reduce many services and furlough non-essential employees. Essential services, which generally relate to public safety, continue to operate even in the absence of appropriations.
After 24 years of this nonsense, isn’t it time to rip off the bandaid and treat the infection?
Terminate all ‘non-essential’ federal employees, and kill Obamacare. Kick any able-bodied Americans off Medicaid.
Of course no welfare for illegal aliens.
Come up with a yearly budget where they cannot spend a penny more than budgeted, projected spending based upon the previous year income. Start paying off the 37 trillion.
Finally. A line-item veto for the executive.
But these would be adult decisions ...
If I have that going for me, I'm holding out for 5 hours, minimum.
