Russian Nazis want Lebensraum. If Ukraine, the second biggest country in Europe, is erased as a modern society all the better in their view.
A few days ago we got video evidence from the Ukrainian side showing them attacking Russians at the northern edge of the salient. Actually, beyond the northern edge, meaning the Russians were advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory. Which is very odd behavior for a supposedly desperate, collapsing Russian garrison that should be trying to fight its way out of a trap. Instead, Russian sources at around the same time were reporting an advance into a village north of Pokrovsk and SW of the salient. All very odd if you believe Western propaganda - why were the Russians launching an offensive to further encircle Pokrovsk, if literally just a mile or two away those forces should be trying to save an encircled Russian army?
With the news and videos released today it is apparent the Ukrainian counteroffensive has been ground down; the Russians soaked up the attacks and attritted the Azov battalion, and are now pushing forward, broadening the salient. They wouldn't do this so long as they thought they could tempt the Ukrainians to keep throwing troops into the "vulnerable" zone to try to score a major victory against Russia. With the effective loss of the Azov brigades as a potent strike force Ukraine will struggle to mount any counter-offensives in the future above the level of a single brigade.
Putin has mocked this idea, because it really is stupid. Russia of all countries doesn't need more acreage. What is does need is security against hostile and aggressive armies on its borders. The anti-democracy coup in Ukraine in 2014 showed the NATO aggressors would not be stopped by political appeasement.

Russia has tried to take over Ukraine for 3 and a half years....to no avail... which is a fact. Russia is using motor cycles and donkeys and bicycles and now horses in the war. Ukraine destroys refineries every other day. Russia looses 800-1000 men off the battlefield every day.
And all Russia can do is bomb hospitals and schools and apartment buildings .
