Immigration Data Indicate Indian Student Enrollment May Plummet
Forbes ^ | 10/1/2025 | Stuart Anderson

Immigration data show a nearly 50% drop in the number of international students from India arriving in July and August 2025 compared to the same period one year ago. The numbers indicate that U.S. universities may experience a significant decline in Indian and other international students in the 2025-26 academic year.

Educators say the Trump administration’s policies, which included suspending visa interviews, have contributed to the decline. Universities worry that new immigration rules will also make it challenging to attract international students to the United States.

India is the largest source country for international students to the United States. The number of international students arriving on visas from India to the United States declined by 44.5% (from 74,825 to 41,540) between August 2024 and August 2025, according to ADIS/I-94 data reported by the U.S. International Trade Administration. Student arrivals from India dropped by 46.4% (from 24,298 to 13,027) between July 2024 and July 2025.

Do you suppose the end of easy peasy H1B visas are causing some IT employers to think “Maybe we should think about hiring Americans . . .”?

As long as they pay at least what students from affluent American families pay, qualified foreign students that are peaceful should be welcome to do undergraduate study in the USA.

At the graduate level, initiation by foreign citizens of study or research in national defense technology subjects should not be allowed.

There should be at least 50% participation by American citizens in graduate level activities, but I’m not sure that should be required by law at the current time.

“The numbers indicate that U.S. universities may experience a significant decline in Indian and other international students in the 2025-26 academic year.”

Great news. Whenever I go into a big box store, I find a mini-U.N., polyglot languages, rudeness (like they own the country), etc. It’s about time we declared that we have admitted MORE than our share of foreigners and ramp up deportations, even of legal immigrants when warranted.

England is in such trouble, maybe the US should open more spaces for English-speaking immigrants. Scotland, too, if they’re understandable...

Most of the big universities have outposts in other countries. Now, with online access to professors and library materials, there is decreasing rationale for allowing massive numbers of unvetted foreign students. Many are outright security risks; if not now, later.
