How to stay safe if you meet a wild boar while walking or driving

Wild boars are becoming an increasingly common sight in urban areas across Spain. Towns such as Denia, Javea, Calpe, Pego, El Verger and Els Poblets are among the most affected, with these wild animals no longer sticking to forests. Streets, beaches and even homes are now on their route, leaving locals feeling uneasy. With tourism down, the boars’ presence is even more noticeable.

This isn’t a new problem. The surge in wild boar numbers is linked to a mix of ecological, social and urban factors.

To tackle the issue, the Generalitat Valenciana has introduced a decree with guidelines on population control and wildlife management, alongside financial support for local councils to

What to do if you encounter a wild boar

Keep your distance – don’t touch or corner them.

Warning signs of a possible attack: hair standing on end along the back and a cracking sound like nuts being bitten.

Never feed them.

If driving, stay calm: keep your eyes open, avoid honking, and don’t flash your lights.

Keep campsites and trails clean, as food scraps attract them.

Authorities’ role

The Police and Guardia Civil are responsible for managing the situation, usually by guiding the animals back to their natural habitats. Each municipality has its own protocols depending on the severity of the problem.

Why wild boars are booming

No natural predators: The disappearance of foxes, genets and eagles has helped them multiply.

High reproductive rate: A female can have up to eight piglets per litter.

Milder winters: Climate change means more adults and young survive.

Damage to crops: They ruin fields, orchards and irrigation systems, causing economic losses.

Urban incursions: Their lack of fear of humans brings them into gardens, terraces and streets.

Population control measures include capture cages and studies into sterilisation. Experts agree that long-term solutions require an integrated approach combining population management, public education and urban planning.

Okay. I'll help. If you're driving, you're safe. Period. (Unless you are an idiot, or unless the boar is driving a pickup or carrying a shotgun.)

Never gonna’ lose it. Enough!

Don’t they have truffles to snuffle out or something? I suggest those Spaniards walk softly and carry a big stick. Should they run into a boar ask it “Who’s a good boy?”, throw the stick in one direction then run in the other.

Carry a pistol. And in a car, stay in the car.

I know a guy who ran backwoods hunting expeditions in Alaska. He carried a double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun for defense against bears.

Why a double-barrel? “Two shots are all you’re going to get,” he said.

Five times actually. But that’s okay. It’s not your fault. It’s common knowledge that repetitive posts are caused by global warming.

My understanding is the feral pigs/wild boar in the US can actually have more piglets than that by having two litters per year.

Of the eight piglets born, ten survive.

Slowly back away with no sudden movements. Carry a larger caliber pistol or even better a rifle, oddly the AR-15 is effective. That 30 round magazine carries a lot of grief in it.

Most importantly never go into pig country without a firearm. Pigs are smart. They have seen and heard gunshots and their fellow pigs drop dead from such. They know it brings death. If you shoot and miss they will probably run away. If he every starts to charge you he will not stop. You must kill the pig to survive.

A big pig can kill you, their tusks are extremely sharp. You can not outrun a pig, they are fast.

Funny Story about one very bad ass army dude that lived in my house near Fort Hood, My house is isolated out in the woods some 20 miles southeast of Fort Hood. We have wild pigs. We were sitting outside at night having a drink as is normal. We heard the sounds of a pig in my woods. Ski said he wanted go down and look at it. I told him twice do not go down there without a gun. He went anyway without a gun.
A few minutes later I hear Ski’s running like hell footsteps. He said, “The F-—ing pig was 3 feet tall and just looked at me.” I informed him the pig was deciding to kill him or not. He got lucky.

hair standing on end along the back and a cracking sound like nuts being bitten.

Is that the boar or the person being attacked?
