Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys is revealing his pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
The singer, who's been with the quartet since 1972, shared the health update on Thursday, Sept. 25, on the Oak Ridge Boys' website.
“In March of this year, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Sterban, 82, said. “But I am under the care of the best cancer doctors in the country and, with the help of the Good Lord above, I believe I will be able to get through this.”
“I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concern, and I would appreciate your continued prayers. Most days I’m feeling very good," Sterban concluded, "and I hope to be back out on the road in several months."
Before joining the Oak Ridge Boys, Sterban sang with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. His credits also include performing with Elvis Presley and appearing in the 1972 movie, Elvis on Tour.
The last time Sterban appeared with the Grammy-winning quartet was in May at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Frisco, Texas. The Oak Ridge Boys plan to schedule performances in 2026.
Sterban's health update comes over a year after the late Joe Bonsall announced in January 2024 that he was retiring from touring.

That's not really comforting.
I’m a fan of the Oak Ridge quartet going back to their gospel music origins, before Bill Golden ever thought about growing his beard. This news from Richard Sterban is upsetting & I pray he is part of that small percentage that have good 5-year survival rates for this cancer. Unfortunately, I’ve lost 2 good friends to this in recent years so I know the odds are not with most who receive that diagnosis.
So sorry to hear this!
My husband’s first cancer diagnosis was pancreatic cancer - the doctor was relieved when it turned out to be liver cancer! We were told pancreatic cancer is far worse than liver cancer and mostly impervious to treatment.
He has been the Oak Ridge Boys bass for over 50 years.
Trivia from Wikipedia: The act was founded in 1943 as Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers, but were soon known as The Oak Ridge Quartet. They became popular in Southern gospel in the 1950s and their name was changed to Oak Ridge Boys in the 1960s. They transitioned from traditional southern gospel to contemporary gospel before going into popular music in the mid-1970s.”
I lost a good friend to this horrific disease earlier this year.
Diagnosis to death was nine weeks.
