The article could indicate the sex of the student, without identifying him or her, and without using “they” in reference to an individual student.

If it's not conjoined twins or two individuals telepathically sharing one personality the writer is demanding readers to share their false version of reality. After the fourth article pulling this pronoun BS had me re-reading it to find the other person I had my fill.
Editors who can't make their writers adhere to Rules of Grammar should they, themselves, be fired.
