A half-year ago in the Oval Office, President Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that “you don’t have the cards” in the war with Russia. On Tuesday at the United Nations, Trump lauded the performance of Ukraine’s army and poured scorn on Russia’s military efforts.
“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump said on Truth Social after meeting with Zelensky. “Why not?”
U.S. officials said that Trump issued the statement in part to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to make a deal, since no real progress toward ending the war had been made since last month’s meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska.
The sharp verbal shift from Trump came amid Russia’s continued failure to make significant gains on the battlefield, a slowdown in the Russian economy and a concerted effort by Zelensky to woo the U.S. president.
Trump has spent recent days with U.S. officials who have long pushed for a stronger stance toward Ukraine as he prepared for the meeting with Zelensky, including Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg and new ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz.
They updated Trump on current battlefield conditions, according to two people familiar with the situation, noting that Russia has made little progress in recent years.
Trump was also made aware of a planned Ukrainian offensive which would require U.S. intelligence support, the people said.

Zelensky showed on Tuesday that he has learned from the disastrous meeting with Trump in February. He has smartened up his attire after criticism from Trump supporters and, seated next to the U.S. president ahead of the Tuesday meeting, repeatedly thanked him for his support, praising his efforts to end the war while talking up

This is pressure to force Putin to the table.

It will be interesting to see if they continue after Sept 30.
America’s adversaries around the world have learned one thing with Trump and that is flattery will get you everywhere… It’s widely known here in Asia, Kim Jong-un did it, everybody else is hep to the script and it’s only natural that Zelensky also uncovered the code of how easily this guy is flipped
“Spam don’t spend.”
All he has to do is get his name on the board to stop us calling him a freeploader.
Europe should have been paying for Ukraine's defense all this time, not U.S. taxpayers. That problem was in Europe's backyard, not ours. I don't give a crap if the US sells drones or anything else to Ukraine or Europe. My tax dollars are no longer being wasted on another proxy was with Russia.

These obtuse headlines crack me up. “ Good luck to all.” Is obvious. Europe can have it’s war without us.
PoorMouth Joe Biden is cryin' pretty loud these days.

Zelenskyy does not want to end its war with Russia. Putin does not want to end the war with Ukraine. Thus the war will continue, many will die, both Ukrainians and Russians.
So the United States will sell weapons to NATO, who may gift or sell the weapons to Ukraine. The European economy is not doing well as a result of its green new deal policies and massive subsidized illegal immigration. They purchase Russian energy which gives Putin money to continue the war. When will they cry uncle?
President Trump will not send any more US taxpayer money to Zelenskyy and refuses to send US troops.
Many here seem to take his comments at the UN to indicate he is walking away from the conflict. I seriously doubt that, as he has made a personal commitment to ending the war. He also realizes that simply walking way is not in US interests, even if he clearly expects Europe to bear the costs (as they should).
Bull...Trump was able to correctly ascertain that Russia is playing games and has no interest in peace. Russia is not going to like this new arrangement.

At the German occupation of the Saar, the Anschluss and at Munich either the French or the British but never both were agreed to threaten war to stop Hitler. And neither by itself felt strong enough to act alone.
Europe has a much larger population and is far richer than Russia, but is not actually unified despite the pretensions of the EU.
None of them individually are prepared to take strong actions if needed to confront Russia without US backing.
