There are rumors the coming National Defense Strategy, currently being prepared by the Dept of War, will begin that process. Trump's statements and actions on Greenland, Panama, Canada, Venezuela, etc show a focus on the western hemisphere. At the same time, he is disengaging from the defense of Europe. Our Asian partners spend even less on defense than Europe, yet they are arguably more dependent on US protection. Asia could certainly get the same "push" to fund their own self defense as Europe received.

Elbridge Colby’s policy paper emphasizing Defence of the Homeland over unattainable deterrence against China in Asia.

It’s just a recognition of reality, at this point.
