Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, faces five felony charges related to voter fraud for registering her dog to vote.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Yourex submitted mail-in ballots under the name Maya Jean Yourex, her dog’s name, during the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary.

The first ballot was successfully counted, while the second was challenged and rejected, officials said.

Last October, Yourex self-reported the crime to the Orange County Registrar of Voters, which in turn reported it to local authorities.

An investigation was launched which determined that Yourex had registered Maya Jean to vote, participated in the two elections, and then posted about the activity on social media.

In January 2022, she posted a photo of the dog wearing an “I Voted” sticker and posing with the fraudulent ballot. In October 2024, she posted a photo of the dog’s collar and a mail-in ballot addressed to her, saying that she still received them...

“Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, faces five felony charges related to voter fraud for registering her dog to vote.” There’s been times I thought my Labrador Retriever, Henry, might have cast a more sensible vote than some of the people I’ve read about.

I submitted my dog’s name to some liberal “Rock the vote” site and they kept sending information to her to complete her registration.

If mail was sent to the dog, did Laura have any right to open the envelope?

Seeing as it’s Cali, I’d bet the dog’s signature on the mail-in ballot passed review easily.

If the dog requires some specialty medication (fillable at a specialty pharmacy), the veterinarian will make the prescription to whatever name the owner claims.

My guess is that somehow created enough of a paper trail for the election registrar to allow the registration.

Being charged is one thing but actually being sentenced is something we don’t see.

At my pharmacy, we include the person’s first name next to the last name. There is also a drop-down menu to list the new entrant as human or animal, so pets aren’t be entered in as people.

I mean, sometimes people mess up, especially when new, and they get put in as a person. That usually gets fixed by the pharmacist five minutes later unless they have a human-sounding name and not one like, “Scruffles.”

That sounds like a good policy.
I don’t know how the name was entered in the computer. On the bottle all it had was dog’s name followed by the owner’s last name.
