1983 NEWS SPECIAL: AIDS in America | Early AIDS Documentary

In the early 1980s, AIDS was one of the most feared and misunderstood health crises in America. This News special report, originally broadcast when the epidemic was still new, takes a hard look at the growing menace that had been claiming lives since 1979.

The program features the voices of people living with AIDS, giving viewers a rare glimpse into the human cost of the disease at a time when treatments were limited and misinformation was widespread. Some believed AIDS could be spread by casual contact — a reflection of the fear and stigma of the era.

More show notes: A very young Anthony Fauci can be seen in this 14 minute documentary.

I worked in a big city ER during the 1980s....a city that was almost as famous for its pervert culture as San Francisco. I can't even count the number of individuals I saw who looked like they could have been featured in a documentary about the liberation of Dachau. I had no sympathy for them then and I have none for them today.

And I don't care who might find that comment offensive.

I remember all the fear mongering in the mid 80s. I was never the least bit worried about AIDS. I don’t shoot up and I’m not a rump ranger. Ergo, I had nothing to worry about.

The people infected by faggot blood transfusions did nothing wrong either.

The “mainstreaming” of homo behavior spread it.

Yes. Arthur Ashe was really unlucky to get a bad blood transfusion. That was before they screened for AIDS at the blood banks.

I remember seeing videos of these patients on tv back then. I have some idea of what you saw.

In this video they said that some dying from AIDS were “very cross and demanding”. This has something to do with it? I’d love to know more.

I remember this so clearly. We were all supposed to be so concerned cause anyone could get it. Well it didn’t take long to figure out that if you were not a homosexual, adulterer or IV drug user then there was virtually no way to get it short of receiving contaminated blood. And once they stopped taking blood from high risk donors the risk was over for anyone who didn’t engage in high risk activity.

I was the administrator of the ER,not a physician or a nurse.I did everything but touch the patients.I don’t recall “cross” or “demanding”...possibly because the ones we saw were very, very weak and very, very seriously ill. Of course back then every night on the local and national news we saw stories in which they were demanding a cure, etc.

Yup...Arthur Ashe was truly an innocent victim...unlike most Americans who had it.IIRC it was still possible back then to sell your blood...which many, many junkies would do and also back then it was also possible for perverts to give blood.

I forgot to mention hemophiliacs...who required daily doses of “Factor VIII”...which came from sold or donated blood.

I still think that AIDS was a check-valve on societies that get a bit too ‘wild’.

In 1991 a (straight, otherwise nice) lady I worked with blasted me for saying that AIDS never affected the general public, in other words, it was avoidable, EASILY avoidable. It was just weird, like I said that the emperor had no clothes - something everyone knows, but no one would say.

And here is the largest single collection of stats on Negative effects of homosexual relations (also heterosexual fornication) - which Google will not show in search results, unlike Bing, or Brave, or DDG.

“Of course back then every night on the local and national news we saw stories in which they were demanding a cure, etc.”

Oh boy do I remember that. I remember them saying “you are killing us”. Then they went off to the bath houses and had sex with multiple men they did not know.

I remember when it came out that being monogamous was the best way to prevent it. I was like “well that will go over like a lead balloon with them”

There are a few of these documentaries on this youtube channel. I’ve watched several. I figure 95% of these guys are dead now.
