Cowboys-Eagles NFL season opener is SUSPENDED and players are rushed off the field
Daily Mail UK ^ | September 4, 2025 | Ben Nagle

The NFL season opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys was suspended in the third quarter due to lightning strikes in the area.

In remarkable scenes, the players were quickly taken off the field and the PA announcer urged fans to 'seek shelter' from the elements.

There was 4:44 remaining in the third quarter when the decision was made by officials at 10:26pm, with the Eagles leading 24-20.

A few minutes later, it was revealed by reporters that the game was suspended due to lightning within eight miles of the stadium, starting a 30-minute clock.

If, after 30 minutes, no more lightning has occurred, the game can continue. Any new lightning strike, though, resets the clock - threatening a long night for football fans.

Many jumped straight on social media to share their fury at the decision, with one noting: 'Soft league, just let them play.'

Another added, 'It's 10:30pm, some of us got jobs', while a third said: 'This would’ve never happened in the 90s or early 2000s.'

In a further twist, the National Weather Service was forced to correct the Eagles' warning to their fans of a 'severe thunderstorm' approaching.

Sports is dead anyway.

No longer do we have contests.

We have Sports Entertainment exhibitions to attract women eyeballs.

NUTSCAR has been doing this Lightning Storm thing since last Season. 1 ZOT within 18 or so miles of the Track (IIRC) and it’s put on hold until 30 minutes pass with no new zots and then the Fans are allowed back in the stands and they get things going again.

So DEAL WITH IT nfl spectators.

It’s ALL ABOUT THE LAWYER AND LAWSUITS !!!

I guess the Steve miller band did the right thing cancelling all remaining gigs for 2025 in case it rained or some other climate change cats-ass-trophy might/could happen somewhere.

We had lightning protocols on the shuttle program. They still do.

I am curious if a professional athlete in any sport, anywhere in the world, has ever been struck by lightning during a game.

Yes, they have. Over 100 years ago.

According to the unbelievable stat line, on that date 101 years prior, Roy Caldwell was struck by lightning in the final inning of his Indians debut. Despite being knocked unconscious, he was revived and completed the game.

His first start on the mound for the Indians came on August 24, 1919. That day, against the Philadelphia Athletics, Caldwell allowed only 1 run and 4 hits through 8 2/3 innings.

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the unexpected occurred. Although the exact details are disputed, it is fact that a bolt of lightning hit somewhere within League Park, the home of the Indians at that time, and Caldwell was knocked unconscious. “A bolt came hurtling from the sky and smashed into the ground near the pitcher’s mound,” wrote Indians historian Franklin Lewis. “A direct hit would have killed any mortal. Caldwell was struck, a glancing blow fortunately. He was flattened and knocked unconscious for five minutes.”

Others on the field also felt the impact of the strike. Catcher Steve O’Neill’s cap and mask were knocked off. Athletics third base coach Harry Davis‘ hat was knocked off. Numerous others on the field reported feeling numbness. However, Caldwell received the brunt of it, being knocked to the ground. Everyone feared that he was dead.

However, after five minutes, Caldwell woke up, and he insisted on finishing the game. He got the final out, a ground ball to third base, for the complete game win in his memorable Cleveland debut. After the game, he reported having a burn mark on his chest. Besides that, there was no lasting impact from the lightning strike.

They should have just kept playing.
Delayed games never turn out the way they should.

Those statistics would be different if standing in an open field during a lightning storm. IIRC golf games are stopped during thunderstorms.

Think of all of the lawsuits from people if a lightning strikes harms anyone in stands or on the field ...
If enough people get hurt...it could wipe out league profits for a few years...
The reasoning: league didn’t exert due diligence in the face of dangerous conditions...many wild animal herds can get wiped out by lightning strikes ....would not be different with humans huddled together...on the field or in the stands..

Chi Chi Rodrieguez was quoted once that, if lighting was in the area, he would go to the highest point on the golf course and hold a 1-Iron as high as he could, because not even God can hit a 1-Iron properly.

The correct pronunciation of his name can be heard in an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati.

Getting struck by lightning is no way to die. Getting caught in the gears of a combine or getting your nuts cut off by a Laplander. Now that’s the way to die.

Having worked as a lifeguard, lisbility issues require removing people from outdoor areas when lightening is in the vicinity.

There was a NASCAR race in Long Pond (2012) where the severe storm warnings kept happening, fans told to leave the stands, the race continued so they could reach legal distance, a massive pileup, then the heavy stuff fell and it ended. After the race was concluded, lighting strikes injured nine spectators and killed another.

The rule in all sport is there is an eight-mile radius they measure lightning. If lightning is detected inside the eight-mile zone, the game must be stopped a minimum of 45 minutes. A 30-minute clock is turned on. Each lightning strike inside the zone resets the clock to 30 minutes.

When the clock strikes zero, a 15-minute warmup is allowed before the game restarts at point of interruption.
