If there isn’t an app for determining the height of overpasses along a designated route and alerting you to the lowest ones, there’s a money-maker for someone!Garmin RV is one of many

Permit routes are checked as before they are issued. The problem occurs when the load doesn’t match the permit.

Escorts are not required in all states. I don’t know if they are in CO.

here in Florida, the speed limit is 70 on the freeways but I’ve noticed that all of the big heavy trucks. All of the big 18 wheelers are going 80 and 85. It’s a relatively new phenomenon in the last few months so I guess the companies are telling them to shorten their times. We should have accurate traffic data down to the .1 percentage and be able to see what is causing accidents and why. If people are too stupid to gather and analyze data and respond it's on us.

Looks like he had last second doubts and slowed down. If he was going the speed limit, either the load, the truck or the bridge (or any combination of the three) would have given out.

It might have been at speed and just barely caught the beam. It looks like the damage is to the upper corner of the item on the passenger side while the driver's side looks untouched. This would match the slope of the bridge where the right lane is marked 15' 11" and the shoulder is marked 15' 7".
The bridge is a concrete box beam which would take some of the impact but still allow an "almost" to pass through. A look at Street View in Google Maps (mile marker 265) shows previous hits on the bridge.

Thanks for cluing me into those reasons and tech. I didn’t realize a permit had to be issued for some rigs and loads. I have seen escorts for oversize vehicles, but they are not much further ahead or behind.
Could a pick-up with something like a whip antennae that’s the height of the load (or a couple of inches more) travel like a mile or so ahead and if it touches the overpass, a warning goes off in the vehicle and maybe even the carrier and escorts?
