Good question. One reason is that Gordon Lightfoot memorialized it in song. Another reason was that this type of shipwreck seemed like it would never happen on an interior water body under modern conditions.

From what I've read, there are many many shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. Lake Superior is supposed to be extremely brutal.
I've read that some entrepreneurs are salvaging the timber for old shipwrecks on the Great Lakes because the wood is of extremely high quality.
