They had both pumps running. The knew they were taking on water ...plus the wet cargo could have doing shifting causing stress not calculated for in the ships building plans. The original opinion was that the hatch cover clamps had not been “dogged” down tight enough and water over the deck had seeped into the holds. That theory was vehemently opposed by families of crewman, and insurance companies...the theory is not considered true, but no one really knows.

FYI

Lightfoot had changed a lyric in the song...
from..”.a main hatchway caved in” to something else about it growing dark...Lightfoot sung the song with newer lyrics in his later concerts...

The Arthur Anderson is still in service. Lakers last a long time because they don’t have to deal with saltwater & the resulting corrosion.

From what I've read, there are many many shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. Lake Superior is supposed to be extremely brutal.

I've read that some entrepreneurs are salvaging the timber for old shipwrecks on the Great Lakes because the wood is of extremely high quality.

Try Roughest Neck Around by Corb Lund. Its for his brother and anyone else who works on oil rigs. Catchy song and pretty good for country.

That is 100% correct.

The Fitzgerald was at a 27 foot draft. The shoals are at 6 fathoms.

Gave it 9 feet of clearance. 20 foot, or higher, waves.

The Arthur Andersons captain, i think, said he had at least 8 to 10 foot of water washing over his deck at times.

The fitz had a loose keel. And it was a constant source of problems.

And to top it off. It was overloaded for that time of year.

But, this storm was sort of compared to the 1913 storm, which was really bad.

After our graduation from marine diesel engineering school at Sturgeon Bay Wi, we used to have our gatherings there and talked about how lucky none of us ended up on that boat after it went down.
And, we also used to talk about how that thing was built since some of the class went to work at bay ship building after we graduated.

“So we have to watch a video? Screw that.”

Agree. Not watching a video. Just want to read the story.

Dont know. The last i heard was that they did not know if they were going to return it to service for the 25 season.

As far as your comments on the lakers service life...you dont say.

No, he mentioned the most plausible theories at the time he wrote the song. With more information the theories have changed.

a singer-songwriter,

In my experience, those people are singer-song-dictaters .

They dictate. Others write it down.

Yes, there are lots of shipwrecks on Lake Superior. But the vast majority of them date back decades before the 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

A loss like that — in the age of radio communications, radar, and modern U.S. Coast Guard rescue assets — was a total surprise to the shipping industry.

Since there was no notification of a problem, then progressive flooding was probably not the ultimate cause of the problem. Either the waterline was improperly painted, or it was loaded to the point the waterline disappeared below the surface. In that case the ship would flip over in a heavy sea.

Either six fathom shoals or superior shoals. The Fitzgerald’s course took it close to both.
