Yet he signed it and was obligated to play for the terms as agreed by both parties. If someone can just tear up their contracts at will, then how can a business be run? I contend if he couldn’t get Jones to agree to a new contract, then he should play it out and go elsewhere. It makes it impossible to manage when no ones adheres to the the terms of their contracts. Green Bay will be forced with the same issues now, and will have to restructure much of their team to accommodate one player.
Except not really agreed upon by both parties. The length of the contract and salary are set by the CBA with the league and the union, there’s a little fine print the player can negotiate, but the main structure has nothing to negotiate. Also not within the player’s control at all is if the team picks up the 5th year option, which Dallas did, again the terms of a 5th year are set in the CBA. Literally the players’ only real option to not sign when drafted, lose a year of potential play time and re-enter the draft next year. Holding out on the 5th year is about the only power the player has.
This is how the NFL has worked for a while now. It’s not that hard to run the business. Honestly in this case maybe make the team not suck so the player wants to be there.
Green Bay won’t have anywhere near the issue because now Parson’s is on a contract he got to participate in. And they came into the off season with plenty of cap space. They’ll be fine.
This reminds me of the Herschel Walker trade to Minnesota. Dallas was pummeled for letting him go, yet they won 3 Superbowls as a result of it. Granted, they did not get near what they got from Minnesota in this trade, but frankly, I don’t give damn. I have been a Cowboy fan since they came into the league, but the older I got, they just became very unimportant to me. Especially with the bastardization of the NFL.
Thee is a long list of top paid players who aren’t worth it, I suspect this guy won’t live up to his pay. He plays for sacks, nothing more.
I think this was a great deal for the Boys.
1) A look at MP’s last half-season for the past couple of years shows he fades badly (esp. if you’re not the NYGiants).
2) His playoff performances are worse (Madden: “Big players make big plays in big games.”)
3) He clearly was going to be a cancer in the locker room.
4) Believe it or not, Dallas needed the GB tackle more than MP’s rush. We have needed a stopper /pass rusher in the middle for years.
5) 2 #1s, yes, they are low, but that’s gold. Those can be packaged for superstar.
6) Pack eats as massive contract, and woe to them if he gets hurt.
