Rise and fall of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin – from Putin 'coop' to plane crash
Daily Star UK ^ | 8/23/2025 | Steven White

Two years ago today, a small plane exploded in mid-air over Russia and killed all 10 people on board, including the infamous Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The 62-year-old billionaire was the head of a mercenary gang called the Wagner Group. His abrupt end, however, came just two months after his bold - some would say barmy - decision to march his team towards the Moscow in an act of utter defiance against Mad Vlad's authority.

Formerly an ally of the Russian dictator, he went from being Putin's chef to public enemy number one of the Kremlin. Below we take a look at the rise and fall of Yevgeny Prigozhin on the anniversary of his death.

Caviar chef Prigozhin went from serving caviar to the Russian elite to launching a full-blown mutiny against it. As the shadowy boss of Russia’s most feared mercenary group, Wagner, lived a life straight out of a gangster flick.

Once nicknamed 'Putin’s Chef' for his cushy catering contracts with the Kremlin, his story is one of riches, ruthlessness and rebellion. But it all came literally crashing down in spectacular style in on August 23, 2023 when his private jet fell out of the sky in a massive fireball.

-snip-

By mid-2023, things boiled over as Prigozhin went into full-on rebel mode. Furious at what he called “incompetence” and “corruption” in the Russian Ministry of Defence, he marched 25,000 Wagner fighters toward Moscow in a jaw-dropping coup attempt.

For 24 hours, the world held its breath. Russian forces scrambled and Putin vanished from TV.

Then, all of a sudden, Prigozhin stopped. A mysterious 'deal' brokered by Belarus brought the mutiny to a halt and Wagner’s mission to an apparent end.

Your news sources can be most interesting. In addition to the "war was over two years ago" article, there is this today in the Daily Star.

Donald Trump sparks new health fears as he uses 'thick' makeup to cover up hand Rory Gannon Showbiz Journalist and Rebecca Robinson, Daily Star, 23 Aug 2025 14:51, 23 Aug 2025

So many fears. So much Daily Star.... Their chief columnist should be named Tab Loid.

Is this some pro ukraine propaganda site now?

The worse ukraine does, the more the pro zelensky, anti russian spam gets posted, to gaslight people into continued support of ukraine.

🙄

Really dumb for Putin to blow up his best general Prigozhin. Prigo would have captured the rest of Donetsk if Shoigu and Gerasimov gave him the ammo he wanted. Instead, Putin blew him to bits.

It flips back and forth. One post will tell us Russia is on the verge of complete collapse. The next post will tell us Ukraine is on the verge of complete collapse.

That does smell more like propaganda than news. But hey, it’s equal-opportunity propaganda.

“Prigo would have captured the rest of Donetsk if Shoigu and Gerasimov gave him the ammo he wanted. Instead, Putin blew him to bits.”

It seems politics and loyalty were far more valuable to Putin then winning the war. Putin is in a trap. As long as the war goes on he can stay in power. But end the war and there will be a sharp recession as there was the world over after WWI and for most countries after WWII. That’s because they no longer can support the war economy and must convert back to the civilian economy. Due to the interest rate and the high wartime cost of labor, there is no civilian economy to revert to. Thus, end of war equals end of Putin. If someone else had taken over a year ago, they could blame everything on Putin and ask the world for help. Germany, at least, and probably some others would leap in with loans. (Most of which would disappear into oligarch’s pockets.)

--- "Putin is weak."

Big graphics yet again. How -- searching for a word /sarc -- predictable.

I have no problem with the notion that "Putin is weak." I also have no problem with "Zelensky is weak," and all those other European leaders who came to lobby President Trump last week for "something" proving themselves "weak" and manipulative. Because those sneaky little EU girl and boy leaders are weak too.

As to issues related to becoming "weak," here is a real concern you propagandists regularly sidestep or ignore.

$ 37,268,563,499,138 and still rising rapidly

Your arguments are weak and weakening, like the "bravery" of a Macron or Starmer. But so many want this nation to go deeper into debt -- that is, become weaker -- by politicking for spending more money in search of geopolitical goals of which they dream.

Dream on. Putin, Zelensky, all those Euroweenies and you too are weak. Yeah, team.

Yep. But in order for that to happen, Putin will have to do something about the corruption in the Russian military.

Putin would have to replace all of his generals and replace them with Prigozhin's guys.

Putin was afraid that Prigozhin was going to become too powerful.

So he'll rather deal with corrupt Generals even though they suck.

They do pollute the site with their excessive propaganda and they’ve been doing so for over three years now.

I didn’t know we had so many Ukrainians on FR until the war started.

Russia’s momentum in Donetsk ended immediately after Putin blew up Prigo. Prigo was the last Russian general to capture any meaningful Ukrainian territory (Bakhmut). It’s been over 2 years after the fall of Bakhmut and Russia still hasn’t captured Chasiv Yar which is only 10 miles away from Bakhmut. Strategic failure by Putin. And he also gave Ukraine 2 years to restructure their military to the sophisticated drone defense of today. Dumb dumb dumb of Putin.

Gosh, by golly, we've moved from "lost the war two years ago" to "invasion ends by Easter" and now on this thread "Russia's momentum in Donetsk ended immediately after Putin blew up Prigo."

Note the rhetorical succession over a number of threads from "lost" to "ends" to "momentum ended."

Given such, it's a wonder that last week's Euroweenie festival at the White House had to take place at all.

This and that very long thread -- now well over 19 thousand comments -- it seems that a part of the FR 'family" is involved in group therapy. Or drooling over the dead, which is easy to do from a computer keyboard.

Seems to be a lot more of that from the zeepopaths these days.

And I got scolded by a serial zeeptroll yesterday for "[going rabid] in support of North Korea/Russia" when I mildly suggested that sociopaths were dancing in the blood of the dead Nork soldiers.
