Stray dog slaughters 23 baby sea turtles just hours after they hatched on Florida beach

A stray dog massacred 23 newly hatched sea turtles on a North Florida beach just hours after the babies emerged from their nests, sparking calls for locals to leash their pets.

The tiny carcasses were discovered during a routine survey by the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol in Atlantic Beach, officials announced in an August 21 Facebook post.

The slaughter occurred near Second Street as the vulnerable hatchlings made their first desperate crawl toward the ocean, investigators say.

Evidence at the gruesome scene pointed to an unleashed pet as the culprit behind the carnage.

...

The suspected canine remains at large, prompting Atlantic Beach officials to issue an urgent plea for beachgoers to photograph and report any loose dogs to police immediately.

The timing of the attack makes it particularly heartbreaking. Sea turtles typically come ashore to dig their nests on beaches, with eggs incubating for approximately 60 days in the sun-warmed sand, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

When I lived in South Florida we used to release sea turtles on the beach. Many would try to cross A1A only to be run over by cars.

Most baby sea turtles do not survive their dash to the sea. I am not saying that it is not sad, just that it is normal.

It's a slow moving buffet for a lot of animals. Even if they make it to the water there's a bunch of critters there waiting for them too.

So now we have articles about animals doing what comes naturally. That says something about how divorced from nature many men have become, that they think this is somehow newsworthy.

Yep.

Make no mistake I like turtles, even the ones that aren't in soup or made of chocolate, but this is the way the world works.

Baby animals are the predator's light snack.

Nature is brutal but it was his survival.

There’s a reason they lay so many eggs.

No, he would have eaten them. Dogs, unfortunately, just enjoy killing other animals even when they aren’t the least bit hungry.

If one ever gets into your chicken pen they will typically kill every single bird without eating even one.

The Karen-ish reaction to this “slaughter” of turtles, which shouldn’t be on that beach anymore now that humans and their dogs are, almost makes me want to let my leashed dog go after new hatchlings if we see them on the beach. I said “almost”.
