Who knew Klinger would become real
It was wall to wall liberal propaganda, very cleverly executed. We did not realize it back then.
Sadder than when Sidney forced Hawkeye to confront his time on the bus when the woman smothered her baby after he hissed at her to keep it quiet?
It also told us that there was continuous fighting in Korea up to the date/time of the cease fire.
The first couple of seasons were good, but after McLean Stevenson, Wayne Rogers, and Larry Linville left, it became a much different show. Too preachy and self-righteous.
That it’s been 42.5 years since this episode ran is sad in itself.
It also told us that there was continuous fighting in Korea up to the date/time of the cease fire.
I was working midnight shift that year. That final episode was aired at a time when our shift wouldn’t be able to see it live. One woman on our team was a devoted M.A.S.H. fan. She used her second-choice annual vacation selection to be assured of getting the night off.
Ah, jeez. I thought for sure you must have just taken your dog into the vet for the last time.
I was one of the 106 million viewers that night.
In before the “MASH was an anti-war anti-American propaganda TV show” comment.
Missed it, deployed on to the Mediterranean onboard USS Nimitz .
Couldn’t stand Alan Alda
Saw it live - hated the whole Hawkeye seeing the therapist stories and this one didn’t change my perception - “IT WAS A BABBBBY!!”
Liked the overall ending though - but doesn’t hold a candle to Newhart’s ending!
I remember being quite affected and saddened by it, and it was a catharsis that finally spurred me to make a career change, which worked out quite well.
Mash was good for the first few seasons, but eventually turned into one of those shows that should have ended after 4 or 5 seasons. Just like the original Law and Order.
I do not remember the details of the episode. I was a college junior and went to a party to watch the final episide after my part time job.
Henry Blake’s death episode was worse/harder, arguably.
My wife and I watched it while she was in labor with our son.
She was making it very difficult for me to concentrate on the show.
All went well with our son being born just before midnight.
As a Viet Nam veteran I have mixed feelings about the show. I agree it became the Alan Alda show. I refer to him as “Katherine Hepburn with PMS. I really got sad when Henry bought it. Klinger ? Ha !! The real men would have straightened his flowery ass out. If there were a way to remove Alda from the show it could be watchable.
My wife and I just started watching the MASH complete collection. We’re into the 2nd season. What we noticed is that Lt. Col. Henry Blake, Trapper John and Major Frank Burns all played around on their wives...and it was for laughs. As I recall, the replacements for Blake and Trapper John were devoted family men who loved their wives. That’s some improvement...
