Trump called Hungarian premier Orban to question his blocking Ukraine's EU membership: Report

US President Donald Trump called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to address his obstruction of Ukraine's EU membership, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The conversation emerged from Monday's White House discussions between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders.

European officials requested that Trump leverage his relationship with Orban to convince him to abandon his opposition to Ukraine's EU bid, the news outlet reported, citing those familiar with the matter.

Orban maintains opposition

During the call, Hungary expressed a willingness to host future negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy.

Trump said there would be a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, but the location has not yet been finalized.

Orban responded publicly Tuesday on the US social media company Facebook, indicating he received the membership request but remained unmoved. "Ukraine's membership in the European Union does not provide any security guarantees," he wrote. "Therefore linking membership with security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous."

Neither Washington nor Budapest confirmed the call.

Trump should not be augmenting the EU, which is in the socialistic/LGBT/censorship orbit.

This makes no sense. If Trump wants there to be peace between Russia and Ukraine, then there is no possible way that Russia will agree unless Ukraine never becomes a member of NATO. We should have exactly ZERO interest in making Ukraine a member of NATO, actually quite to the contrary, we should seek to freeze them out. However, we should get some concessions in return for that. From my point of view, it seems like the Kamala Harris speech in November 2021 that spoke about Ukraine’s becoming more and more ready to become a member of NATO was the straw that broke the camel’s back and caused the Russians to invade.

Victor Orban is correct here. Let’s get some security guarantees for Ukraine, let’s have them rearm and have their army trained, but Ukraine should be a decidedly neutral country, exactly like Austria was during the Cold War. This eliminates a huge potential problem with very little trouble. I honestly don’t know what Trump is thinking here. FYI, I voted for the man three times, and would gladly vote for him again if he were ever to run for office. But he is making a mistake here.

It worked in the musical. Why wouldn't the "system" work now? That's their think system. Reality isn't nearly as entertaining....

Why would the Euroweenies, even as smug and stupid as they are, admit an economic basket case

I'm sorry they are just that stupid. There are several European "leaders" who have been talking about the EU extending between the Bay of Biscay to the Urals.

What most people forget is that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia started with the negotiations between the EU and Ukraine regarding an association treaty.

It was Yanukovich's decision to not sign the agreement (which would have caused an economic crisis for Ukraine and mainly the eastern provinces) that was the reason for those people (mainly in Kiev and the western part of Ukraine) to start the Maidan demonstrations. The EU had not understood that Ukraine was divided (re languages, religion, history, and recent political elections). The way the western countries (including the US) then supported the Maidan helped to cause the conflict between the west and east of Ukraine.

Since 2022 the Ukraine has been conducting full membership negotiations with the EU. The only good thing is that the war has reduced the number of eastern provinces, which has made Ukraine more homogenous at least when it comes to trade.

In 2013/2014 about 1/3 of Ukraine's trade was with the EU, and another third with Russia. The association agreement would have caused freetrade with the EU but a tariff wall against Russia. Yanukovich tried to keep Ukraine neutral but the EU did not allow Ukraine to have a free trade agreement with Russia.

EU - the European peace project! Most of our politicians are about as clever as the politicians in Europe 1914 - just 100 years previously!

Probably one of the offers in exchange for taking the deal with Putin. The EU is better than NATO which is just a suicide pact.

Why would the Euroweenies, even as smug and stupid as they are, admit an economic basket case

I saw I did not really explain the reason: The EU is full of hidden conflicts - Germany vs France, southern countries vs northern countries, former east bloc countries vs southern countries, and of course the Commission vs the national governments/voters.

One way to keep these potential conflicts hidden is continuous enlargement. And then there are many europhiles who are dreaming about making the EU into a global superpower.

Now, you may well ask (and you already did) how can the membership of an economic basket case, super corrupt country, who also is part of the largest military conflict in Europe since WWIi strengthen the EU?

It won't and it can't, but it may (at least in the short run) increase the power of some EU administrators - and possibly cause some very short term increase in popularity of some European politicians.

They do not have any better reasons than that. We are governed by very unserious persons.

(Note that once again MSM is very guilty.)

Why would the Euroweenies, even as smug and stupid as they are, admit an economic basket case, one whose infrastructure is being methodically destroyed, into their failing-on-all-levels socialist project?

Cheap Ukrainian labor. They used to get cheap labor from Poland, but now, even they are too expensive. So you’ve got to find new sources of cheap labor.

Just you wait…should YOU ever make an I innocent goof, on this site, I show you the correct way to be “helpful”. And FYI, continuing posting to any other poster in your low class way, only degrades your comments.

“Orban is correct and Trump is DEAD WRONG about allowing the Ukraine to join the NATO, which now needs to be dissolved anyway!”

The only good thing about Ukraine joining the EU (or NATO, no difference these days) would be the much-quicker dissolving of the EU as they try to figure out how to pay for that basket case.

You’re only partly correct...re NATO, then WE would be told to foot the bill, with the EU, you are correct, the members of that hot mess would have to, not us, though somehow EVERYONE always expects US to pay for EVERY DAMNED THING!
