Rolls Royce used by Eisenhower in WW2 found with incredible letter inside

An abandoned wreck of a Rolls Royce car which once belonged to US army legend Dwight Eisenhower during World War Two has been found and restored.

Now the magnificent vehicle has been painstakingly put back together. Pat Jeater has spent 11 years lovingly restoring the the car used by Eisenhower back in 1944. After the 1940s it ended up being used as a wedding car and a taxi in Amsterdam.

The letter:

"I also found a copy of the Italian paper La Stampa - it was dated 12th April 1944." Pat found that the letter had been written by a businessman called William Zimdin. It was a request that he and the vehicle be allowed to enter Switzerland but the borders had been closed. Zimdin was a brave man who had been based in Monte Carlo. He branded a ‘dangerous fool’ and was on Hitler’s ‘most wanted’ list as he’d refused to help with the war effort to produce more weapons. He died in the United States in 1951.

So the letter wasn’t anything to do with Ike? Am I correct?

Correct, it was the guy who gave the car to Eseinhouer later. He wrote the letter trying to get into Switzerland with the car to escape Hitler. He didn’t get out so he had the car bricked up in a garage to hide it from the Nazis.

Yes, and a Rolls “used” by Eisenhower, probably means he rode in it once, or maybe not even once. Could have been a staff car in his entourage.

“Abandoned wreck”? Restored for $16,000? Didn’t happen.
Anyone even remotely connected to the restoration business knows what it costs to restore a car.
A good paint job will cost close to $20k, let alone sourcing and repairing various parts.
A wartime Rolls? I think more like 80-100 thousand.

Whiskey and tumblers in the back of Eisenhower’s car. Back when men were men and fighting men drink.

Does it say, “We must terminate Patton in a manner which looks accidental for he knows too much and will speak the TRUTH to the American people”?

I was at a church luncheon about 15 yrs ago and the guest speaker was Eisenhower’s secretary!!!! She is the one who typed the declaration of war - her life story was jaw-dropping.

When did Eisenhower ever declare war, or for that matter any president ever declare war? Only congress can do that.

You gotta read the article to find out, that’s the reason for the sensational headline of course. Fortunately, the summary saved me from the click.

Cheeky no?

Yes. It’s like Lynyrd Skynyrd is touring but with no original members of the band. Same for the Marshall Tucker band.

Eisenhower’s WW2 secretary in Europe was Brit Kay Summersby, died 1975. As President, his private secretary was Ann Whitman, died 1991.

This one definitely, but please take into account that Rolls-Royces, in those days, were about the best thing on four wheels that money could buy 🙂

There are a few things missing from the article, unless my spectacles have deceived me : how old is she, and is she a Wraith, a Silver Wraith or a Phantom III. She looks a little too small to be a Phantom three, however.
