European leaders may have rushed to Washington ostensibly to throw a protective arm around President Zelensky and head off any repeat of February's Oval Office bust-up.
But their real aim is to stop US President Donald Trump threatening long-term European security after his abrupt change of course over how best to end the war in Ukraine.
Not only did Trump drop calls for a ceasefire as a prerequisite for talks about long-term peace, he also - diplomats say - made clear he had no intention of imposing further economic sanctions on Russia.
In short, the travelling European heads of government – plus EU and Nato leaders - want to avoid not just confrontation, but also capitulation.
President Macron of France was the latest to use the C word, saying on Sunday: "There is only one state proposing a peace that would be a capitulation: Russia."

“Trump has proven, beyond a doubt, this was ALWAYS a rump-British-empire, EU and Davos-globalist war”
Trump has proven no such thing.
I’m wondering how acceptable it *IS* going to be.
Hi ANKE69! I hope all is well with you.
Yes, they are clearly working from the same handbook. There’s not an original thought among them. For example, on Friday right as the joint comments of Putin and Trump were ending, some of the media talking heads started saying “Trump got rolled by Putin.” An hour or two later, you saw some of the zeepers dutifully post those exact words here.
I think they prepare their talking points before the events even take place and then just tweak them a little before disseminating them out to their useful idiots.
“ President Macron of France was the latest to use the C word, saying on Sunday: “There is only one state proposing a peace that would be a capitulation: Russia.”
Gee… I would have expected a French president to use the word “surrender” instead of “the C word”. (The C word doesn’t mean what the writer thinks it means, by the way.)
Grifting ungreatful leaches.
I don’t understand why Trump doesn’t just say “screw it” and pull every asset we have out of Ukraine. His base wouldn’t be upset by that and he can’t run anyways.
Further... Are the “European leaders” going to pony up resources, weapons, boots on the ground to perpetuate a permanent stalemate or even win a war? I say no way.
Yes, of course he has. Every time he (and especially JD Vance) talk about no further commitment, the Europeans step up with talk about more aid, more weapons, deploying troops. Both Macron and Starmer have made such comments, many times.
Trump has drawn them out.
GWOT and Iraq, huckleberry. How convenient some folks forget.
Ukrainians complete mission in Iraq
Which is a Russian propagated lie.

That has not proven “beyond a doubt, this was ALWAYS a rump-British-empire, EU and Davos-globalist war”.
It has only proven the post-Cold-war U.S.-EU relationship has required U.S. leadership no less than was the case during the Cold War; which Reagan proved a number of times. That leadership has too often failed - when circumstances allowed - to get the Europeans (besides the U.K.) to depend less on our leadership to do what they ought to do anyway. All that has been proven is that when the U.S. makes uncompromising demands on our European allies they waken from that dependency and begin to be better allies who contribute more what they ought to contribute anyway.
It has proven nothing about Putin’s invasion or why Putin invaded.
Yep, that’s what I’m talking about.
I’m doing ok.
Been very busy with work, and I’m soooo ready for some cooler weather.
Hope all is well with you, too. :)
People have already forgotten that Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. Everybody speaks the same language and there are millions of people related to each other on both sides of the battle lines.
The Euros don’t want Russia to gain any turf but the Euros are 75 year old women watching a fist fight from a distance of 50 feet. They are also about to become slaves of Islam.
Well... you are very selfish and ungrateful.
Ukrainian troops helped America in Irak. They bled for America..
Over 6,000 Ukrainian service members participated in military operations in Iraq and Kuwait over the course of the war. The deployment included a peak presence of approximately 1,600 to 1,700 soldiers at any one time, with the total cumulative number reaching over 6,000 due to troop rotations between 2003 and 2008. About 20 Ukrainian troops were killed, more than 50 severely injured.
Don’t tell me you would prefer the corrupt Russians in the Kremlin to dictate the world order with their ultra-close allies Islamic Iran, Commie North Korea and communist China?
Russia just recognized the Talibans. Russia continue to support Hamas and Hezbollah. Russia is right now harboring corrupt and disgraced former President of Syria. Russia and Tucker have also harshly condemned Israel for their Gaza operation.
ALSO:
“Ukraine was there when the U.S. asked for help”:
After 9/11 when the U.S. invaded Iraq, we sent out a call for assistance to form a “coalition of the willing.” In over five years, more than 6,000 Ukrainians did military service by supporting the U.S. in either Iraq or Kuwait. Eighteen Ukrainian soldiers died in Iraq. The U.S. Army website states “the Ukrainians served as the third-largest coalition forces contingent in Iraq.” Ukraine was one of only three countries to openly support U.S. operations in Afghanistan when that war started. Ukraine sent her troops and during our withdrawal helped evacuate various personnel from Afghanistan. The Ukrainian military rescued people trapped in Afghanistan by “deploying their special forces troops into the city on foot to conduct the rescue.” Russia did not help the U.S. in either of these situations and I am sure was cheering our enemies on. It is unfortunate that Trump, Vance and Finstad are so ignorant of Ukrainians’ affection for America and of Americans, they are willing to sell Ukraine and America out to a common enemy — Russia.

The US Deep State isn’t the only one worried about the exposure of Ukraine-related corruption.
Why do the Europeans want an unending war?
