It is odd how people will get stuck on ideas and will hate you if you want to deviate in any way. I have seen it plenty of times in the engineering field.
Guilty. Years ago, my mind had decided that clerestory windows were actually ‘celestory’ windows. They were called that because, I was certain, they were high up on the wall to let in ‘celestial’ light. Thus, they were ‘celestory’ windows. Argued that point with friend, who showed me a dictionary. One my more humbling moments...
Most of us want to see ourselves as being right about things important to us. As a result we tend to identify, ie involve our ego, with our own beliefs, attitudes, or positions on issues. The more strongly we identify, the less tolerant we are of the range of positions which differ from us. If the alternative position is far enough away from our own, we even tend to distort our perception of it and make it seem even more discrepant (Trump = Hitler, law enforcement = fascism.). The key is the ego involvement: disagreement with our own position feels like a personal threat or ego insult against us, so we want to defend our selves and fight back. This holds for many domains, and both sides of the political divide.
Yep, try answering good a question in a thread about say computer cpu’s or graphics cards, and watchthehate unfold... over graphic cards lol! Or a windows vs Linux thread, or anything g really. Redit is chokcerblock full of threads like that where people go absolutely mental if you don’t accept their version of reality.
There’s plenty of people stuck on ideas here at FR.
Just read the Ukraine threads, or some threads dedicated to UFO or other ideas that can’t soak through thick skulls.
I’ve been involved in a situation since I was a teenager that was totally unbelievable by parents, sibs and other relatives. This situation has worsened with old age and is even more unbelievable to the point to where my last remaining sibling, a sister, laughs until she cried when I tried discussing it.
So people stuck on their own ideas is really all over the place. I’m certain many here can attest to that.
Back to the main thread, academics have an excuse, they are self righteous assholes to begin with.
