A Super Bowl not being played on American soil has never felt more likely with the NFL's international expansion of regular season games, with London making a strong case through British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson.
London's Wembley Stadium has hosted regular-season NFL games for a decade, with it always being mentioned for the loftiest of the league's expansion goals for an actual franchise.
While Mexico City, Toronto, and Munich would also love to be in the race to host arguably the biggest annual game on the world's sporting calendar, Mandelson's case gives England's capital city a possible leg up.
'I’ve made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the US to take place in Britain,' he told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on Thursday, per The Times.
Mandelson's assertion came as he asked if there were any workers from the NFL in the audience.
'I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador. We love it, we love it.'

Don’t tell me.
I know what emblem will be in the end zone.
Free Palestine.
Only a few Americans care about the NFL? Doesn’t the NFL have the highest ratings of any sport in America for their games?
Isn’t the Super Bowl often the most watched televised event in any given year?
I’m not sure how you’re saying that only a few Americans care about the NFL.
Their gay cheerleaders would fit right in.
Even starting a game at 9:30 is a bit rough. You really shouldn’t be starting past 7 local time. Which would be 4 EST, noon where I’m at. The problem with that is you lose a lot of good pregame show time, ie time for the network that forked over billions to sell commercials. They like that all day festival.
One obvious problem: The Super Bowl usually kicks off around 6:30 Esatern time. That’s 11:10 PM in London. They’d be playing the game in the middle of the night.
Why not the UEFA Champions League Final Game in the USA
I could see that eventually happening.
With the cost of tickets on top of airfare, only the very very very rich will be able to attend. Up till now it’s just been the very rich.
Hell, more than half the players would be jailed under their strict speech laws.
“The problem with that is you lose a lot of good pregame show time…”
That wouldn’t bother me, as I have not paid attention to those hours and hours of commentary for a long time.
Sure, but it would bother the networks that pay them billions. In the end they’re the customers.
I usually just tune into the fourth quarter if the game is close.
Start the game earlier (EST). The NFL is not going to like that.
“Champions League finale”
Never heard of it. What sport is it?
NOT AS LONG AS THE MUZZIES RUN THE UK
Good luck. That would end the NFL as we know it.
Sporting league championships should be limited to countries that have a franchise in that sport.
The NFL’s US ratings, demos, and ad revenue must really suck...
Go woke, go broke.
So Saddiq Khan get the Super Bowl?
Not just no but hell no.
Now that said, a wild-card playoff game if some lightly-attended team like the Panthers or Titans slipped in? Why not. 5pm start is a nooner here EST, good lead off for your Sunday coverage.
