CRUNCH TIME in Alaska: Trump set to meet Putin in push for Ukraine Peace
BBC ^ | Aug 14 | BBC

US and Russian officials will converge on the state of Alaska ahead of a highly anticipated Friday meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

The pair will meet for the first time in six years, as Trump tries to enact a key campaign pledge to end Russia's war in Ukraine.

The US president, who has portrayed himself as a global peacemaker, hopes to leverage his personal relationship with Putin to achieve a ceasefire breakthrough where others have failed.

On Thursday he assessed there was a "25% chance" the meeting would not be successful.

Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky has been excluded from the talks, and warned that any resolutions made in his absence will be meaningless.

In Anchorage there are few signs of the impending high-stakes meeting, except for the international media that have descended on the area.

Journalists are rubbing elbows with holidaymakers from the "lower 48" states on visits to the Alaskan wilderness during the height of the tourist season.

Friday's meeting between the two leaders will take place entirely on a nearby US military base – a reflection of security concerns and the relative brevity of the planned sit-down, currently scheduled to last just a few hours.

peace is easy.. Russia leaves and there is peace.

Anything else = war continues until Russia leaves later. Either way Russia leaves.

There is only one way to defeat a people occupying land that refuse to leave. You have to kill them all. And since no one is willing to do that type of war anymore, Russia is doomed to lose, it is just a matter of time and money.

Usual trolls here who think that by SPAMMING this site by saying Russia must leave Ukraine...that Russia will actually listen to them. It’s an embarrassment to us Texans as we DID NOT vote for forever wars.

Ukraine is doomed to lose. It has run out of fighters and can’t retake land it lost before 2014.

Ukraine is 100 times stronger than the Afghans ever were. They will win, if they want to win. It is simply a matter of time.

Well maybe if all those fighting-age men returned to Ukranie from Poland, they might have a chance.

If the Russians were actually able to win the war and enter Kyiv, do you think that the Ukrainians would just lay down their arms and accept Russian rule? Russia would only win the prize of having a prolonged insurgency on their hands.

There are millions of Russian ethnics that live outside the Russian Federation but in the territory that was the Soviet Union.

The cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg do not have the jobs or the housing to accommodate them.

Putin needs to be sure that Russian ethnics can remain and prosper where they now reside without discrimination.

You may think of a passport as merely an expensive ID, but it really says mess with me at your peril.

When I traverse a foreign land, my US passport implies the full military might of the USA may be applied to provide for my safety.

“Russia would only win the prize of having a prolonged insurgency on their hands.”

Keep in mind that TWO can play that game and there are MILLIONS of potential (and actual) insurgents now in, literally, EVERY country in Western Europe.

So the Neocons might find that their continued harassment of Russia (for not capitulating to their demands) could easily BACKFIRE.

I'm going to just pray for President Trump. He sure has big shoulders and a view of what our forefathers hoped for.

But most of all, I think he wants World Peace....where all other matters will resolve themselves with a little work.

“Anything else = war continues until Russia leaves later. Either way Russia leaves.”

They’re not going to just leave and Ukraine doesn’t have the strength to drive them out. Now what are we supposed to do about it?

I don’t think anything re long-term peace will result. Trump is sincere, but Putin is a truly evil entity (equally evil to Zyy). Two strong-willed men will be negotiating, one controlled by Satan, and the other ... well, we have to do some praying for him.
