BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Brentwood Police Department said they are wanting to speak with potential victims and anyone with information on the allegations against a former Christian band’s lead singer.

An independent Christian news organization, The Roys Report, reported on June 4 that former Newsboys lead singer Michael Tait allegedly groomed and sexually assaulted multiple people.

The news organisation reported that his alleged “predatory pattern” as well as substance and alcohol abuse dates back as early as 2004.

Days after the report came out, Tait took to social media admitting to using and abusing both cocaine and alcohol. He also admitted to touching men in an unwanted sensual way.

“I am ashamed of my life choices and actions and make no excuses for them,” Tait said. “I will simply call it what God calls it…sin. I don’t blame anyone or anything but myself. While I might dispute certain details in the accusations against me, I do not dispute the substance of them."

Brentwood PD now wants to speak with anyone with knowledge about the Tait allegations and potential victims.

A spokesperson for Brentwood PD said they have a preliminary investigation but have no active cases at this time.

Anyone who has information or any potential victims of Tait are asked to contact Brentwood PD.

In January 2025, Tait stepped down from the band after being the lead singer for 15 years.

Tait did not give an exact reason as to why he stepped down.

In an Instagram post, he said, “While this may come as a surprise given I’ve been touring ever since college, I’ve made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys. This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Universal Music Group dropped Newsboys, while numerous radio stations have dropped DC Talk, Tait, and Newsboys music from playlists (some stations are restrictive in Newsboys, some dropping all, others have imposed a ban on anything after 2009, when Mr. Tait joined the group, and some only 2009-24, since the new recordings replaced Mr. Tait). Some churches have followed through by banning any affected music featuring Mr. Tait was a writer from being performed at worship services.

I remember being called out at church in 2008 when I questioned the use of "Spirit in the Sky" (which DC Talk covered) by the youth music (really dance) group at church for "never been a sinner, never sinned'. Kids claimed there was nothing wrong with their song. I don't think I've seen those folks in church today because they were groomed to never study the Word of God.

The Michael Tait story keeps getting nastier

I wonder how long this had been (or has been) going on? According to original story, Tait did this in 2004, 2010, and 2014.

If he's still doing it, and if he promotes that kind of behavior, then he shouldn't have any kind of leadership presence in ministry (i.e. music). But if he repented of it years ago, and if he every now and then talks about how not to get tempted to do these things like he was, then he can speak a message of repentance that some people might hear and turn to the Lord over.

I am no fan of Michael Tait. I don’t even know who Michael Tait is. I understand the Brentwood police said they have no active case naming Michael Tait as a defendant. This is the extent of my knowledge of this individual.

IMHO, if the police have info on an alleged crime by Tait, they should, through the legal office of the prosecutor, bring charges.

IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BRENTWOOD PD TO EMPOWER A FISHING EXPEDITION TO TRY TO FIND A CRIME COMMITTED BY MICHAEL TAIT, OR ANY PERSON.

From what I’m reading, this week, one victim has called the Brentwood Police Department because many musicians reside in Williamson and Davies Counties, and one is trying to lead in trying to find more. Obviously one victim is trying to work with police.

It’s getting as bad as the Tates Creek report in CCM with Chris Rice a few years ago that his signature song has been blocked by many churches because of the results of the report.

Mr. Tait isn’t the first “gospel” singer to be busted.
