Unexpected group drives Americans' alcohol consumption to 90-year low

Republicans are leading the charge against alcohol consumption in the US.

Across the US, drinking rates have plunged to their lowest level in 90 years.

Only 54 percent of adults said they had a drink last month, according to Gallup data.

That's the lowest level since the polling group began collecting the figures in 1939.

Only 46 percent of Republican voters reported having any alcohol in all of last year, a one third drop from 2023.

By comparison Democrat drinkers only decline by five percent in the same period.

'Americans' drinking habits are shifting amid the medical world's reappraisal of alcohol's health effects,' Gallup said of the findings.

'After decades of relative steadiness in the proportion of US adults who drink, [we have] documented three consecutive years of decline in the US drinking rate as research supporting the 'no amount of alcohol is safe' message mounts.'

So, me:

I used to drink alcohol daily. Anywhere from 4-12 drinks a day depending on what kind of day it was and how much disposable income I had.

About ten years ago my grandmother started to ail due to advanced age, and the notion that I would be needed at her side at any random time was enough to get me to mostly walk away from alcohol so that I wouldn’t be lit if my family needed me to be strong.

Sadly Gram passed a few years back, but I haven’t picked back up the booze. I still drink occassionally - I think I have had about ten beers so far this year - but now when I have a beer it’s actually *a* beer instead of trying to turn it into an Olympic event.

I went to Fenway Park two years ago (Red Sox versus Mariners) and looked into having a hot dog and beer. Beer was about 12 or 15 USD so I just stuck with 7Up with my dog.

Advertisers made it clear that some types of alcohol attract a certain type of consumer.

In many states the liquor taxes are very high—on top of everything else.

I have a hard time keeping it to one. For myself, I find it easier to have none. It seems to be all or none for me.

They have stayed off.

You are onto something. As more people get stoned, less people are getting drunk. Is this a positive indicator? Will alcohol be phased out?

Research in these health fields tends to shift. Right now alcohol has been branded as unhealthy. In a few years, the research just might state the exact opposite, who knows?

All these substances should be used in moderation, that’s all.

I am wondering if I know any Millenials, but I don’t think I do. If I do, they’re most likely Baptists so don’t drink anyhow.

I’m Baptist. I nibble a bit. And there are a lot of Baptists that would make a Catholic blush on drinking.

I know about the taxes too, most have never changed since before Covid. But they marked everything up 150% during Covid and refuse to come down any. They are still expecting and trying to get Covid prices and folks are waking up to this scam... They think folks are too stupid to know Covid is over...

I know the industry well, I have a good friend who is a distributor. I know exactly what their real costs and markups are. And they have universally price fixed the market.

That’s why you always have to make sure you invite two Baptists on a fishing trip.

Millennial is the name given to the generation born from 1981 through 1996, also known as Generation Y (Gen Y).

It is the biggest generation in American history in terms of numbers.

The increasing wealth gap has meant that millennials start off with less household income.

Millennials also face other financial obstacles like a record amount of student loan debt.

Millennials often see their career trajectories and retirement differently from the way that their parents and grandparents did in the past.

Millennials tend to want to follow their ambitions while they’re young and not have to wait to travel, create their own nonprofit, or pursue hobbies.

.....or so it is said.........
