I’ve done autologous donation before hip replacement surgery. I didn’t need it, but it was there just in case.
It doesn’t have a very long shelf life. Plus — and this is RIDICULOUS — if it’s not used, they just discard it. They won’t add it to the blood bank for others to use. At least that’s how it is here.

If your blood is compatible you can do it.
You can also "bank" your blood in advance for surgery and such.
Banking your own blood is not a bad idea for a variety of reasons.
