The Godfather Fans Only Just Solve Subplot Which Left Them Stumped for Decades

The Conversation was just as good.

I wouldn't call it just as good. Hackman was fantastic. Some of the support wasn't great (e.g. Cindy Williams). The film on my device had a (purposely?) gritty look to it, compared to the polish GF and the rest I mentioned had. I was also ambivalent about the ending, which has that 1960s "It means what you think it means" vibe. (although at one level it reminds me of 1959's "Anatomy of a Murder"). At no point did I get nearly as involved with the characters as I did with "The Godfather". Even small but important roles like Connie (Talia Shire) were cast and directed perfectly (I had been engaged to a Brooklyn Italian-heritage girl, and it hit square on the head perfect.)

That said, "The Conversation" holds up well as a cautionary tale about a surveillance society that isn't even communist. It warps judgment and damages psyches and human relationships.

He didn't play Johnny Fontane in the movie; the Johnny Fontane character was based on him.

Supposedly the movie he wanted to be in was "From Here To Eternity," and the "Jack Woltz" character was an amalgamation of Harry Cohn (who ran Columbia Pictures, which made "Eternity") and Louis B. Meyer (whose hobby was breeding racehorses).

There was also an episode between Sinatra and bandleader Tommy Dorsey which is alleged to have involved serious Mob muscle being applied to Dorsey on Sonatra's behalf.

The Godfather is able to breach every layer of protection as if it didn't exist.

While the logistics of how this was pulled off would be interesting I don't know why people would wonder so much about it.

oh man...everything from casting to costumes. “Connie” looked like a cross between Draculas wife and Lilly Munster. Diane Keatons hair looked a some type of birds nest. Pacinos “spiked” hair was just weird. And yes...they totally changed Michaels “personna”. But when they had the “Mafia hit” by helicopter, i thought “ok, now were totally into Bruce Willis action movie territory”. A total, top to bottom flop.
