From a tiny hotel room that resembles a prison cell, James Talarico says that he will stay away ‘for however long it takes’ to stop a Trump-backed redistricting plan.
James Talarico isn’t like most Democrats. For starters, the Texas state representative is a Joe Rogan–friendly guy whose twang leaks out between critiques of the billionaire class. This week, Talarico is making news for leading an exodus of Texas Democrats who fled the state to block a redistricting vote that could carve out as many as five new Republican congressional seats and help the Republicans keep their House majority next year.
Exodus is apropos because Talarico, 36, is the grandson of a Baptist preacher and works on his Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary studies when the Texas legislature is out of session. He was in Illinois on Wednesday when I asked him about the Trump-backed redistricting plan, what it means to be a God-loving liberal, and the future of the Democratic Party.

Sadly it would be a total shock for a confessional Lutheran pastor and congregation to excommunicate an unrepentant Demonicrat member.
A Baptist PK turned Presbyterian.
Kind of adds up.
God is love, truth and life. Die hard Democrats possess none of these.
Well, if he’s abdicated his position of representing the people who elected him, remove him from office and have another election.
This isn’t just about political ploy but these people were elected to represent the people, not push their own agenda.
Talarico’s only “god” is his johnson.
“the pro-homosexual, left wing PCUSA.”
Those PCUSA-ers sure do give Presbyterians a bad name! Our PCA Church is the opposite of that satanic bunch.
“A Baptist PK turned Presbyterian.”
I’m a Baptist PK turned Presbyterian, but not PCUSA. They’re “off the deep end”, as Dad would say.
Even with PCA churches, I warn folks to use discernment - not all PCA churches are equal, and a few are quite problematic. Don’t draw conclusions based on the sign outside.
There are reasons that metropolitan Atlanta is split between three Presbyteries and metropolitan Philadelphia is split between two. And Louisiana Presbytery no longer exists.
“Even with PCA churches, I warn folks to use discernment “
That should be the case with any church. My years in the parsonage, then Seminary, have given me a reliable BS factor. I have walked out of churches mid-sermon, mid-song service, and even before the start after looking at the bulletin, hymnals, instruments, etc. I won’t waste my time.
I am not 100% in board with PCA — the reason we don’t join.
My thoughts, also. One cannot support abortion, the alphabet people, etc and be a born again Christian. Christians are identified by their walk, not their talk.
