U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow on Wednesday to meet with Russian leadership, a source familiar with the plan said on Tuesday.

Officials in Washington provided few details of Witkoff's schedule.

"The president has noted, of course, that Special Envoy Witkoff will be traveling to Russia this week, so we can confirm that from this podium," State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters.

"What that will entail, I have no details for you."

Russia's state-run TASS news agency, quoting aviation sources, said an aircraft believed to have Witkoff on board, had already left the United States.

Trump thought he might be able to cajole Putin into a deal. He figured Putin was just another gangster like the rest he’s dealt with, because Trump does not think in terms of ideology. So he gave Putin a try, gave him a chance to negotiate in good faith. Putin took a pass, and now Trump knows. Since that didn’t work, he is now set to get serious and do some FAFO on Putin. Stay tuned.

I am confident that Russia has consulted with China and India to assess their intentions regarding the secondary sanctions. Trump will slap on the sanctions when there is no ceasefire. And when Putin finally wants a ceasefire, Trump can inform him of the additional requirements necessary to get the sanctions off.

Someone get it through "Z"s head that Russia gets the two areas covered by the referendums.

Ukraine gets Odessa and free passage forever. And gets to keep what's left of their cities. Ukraine will never miss those two pieces....not even a little bit.

Trump should cut all Indian visas and leave tariffs as the secondary punishment. This builds support in the MAGA base to get tough with Putin since it also gives them a very big win.

By leave tariffs as a secondary punishment I mean don’t as additional tariffs yet. Leave that for a later date if things do not improve.

Same with China, do not allow Chinese nationals to attend any schools. It would be nice if Europe did the same. Somehow I think Chinese higher education just doesn’t quite cut it right now.

The issue of Chinese students coming to the US has already been discussed in a previous round of negotiations. China released the hold on rare earths in exchange, among other things.

Caring about Africa…Probably for a reason. China should not have such leverage

Praying for some kind of success.

I think the bigger problem will be "Z" who has sworn that Russia will not get an inch. Thousands of missing Ukrainians later....no gain.

Also, being allowed doesn’t mean favourable treatment. Lean on the colleges and universities to admit more US students

From “Russian leadership” might one infer he will not be meeting with President Putin?

Most of the Chinese students at the graduate level are studying STEM fields. I hate to say it, but the US does not have a huge reservoir of competent students in STEM. Chinese undergraduate students are paying full tuition, so there is less of an issue since they are paying full price for an American product.

My guess would be that he WILL be meeting with Putin...with several other Russian leaders.

Not meeting with Putin doesn't make sense. Negotiations can be done anywhere.

Training Ukrainians to use things like F-35s and Abrams tanks would not upset India or China, but it might make Putin more receptive to a reasonable deal.

I think Russia and Ukraine need to write down what they want, but only a third party can craft a signature-ready peace plan likely to be acceptable to both sides fast.

This third party shouldn’t be the US because the US government doesn’t want to reduce Ukrainian bargaining power.

Once a signature-ready peace plan is crafted, both sides can be urged to sign on.
